Rating:                                                  PG
U.S. Release date:                                October 5, 2012
Running time:                                        87 minutes

Voice Cast:                                           Catherine O’Hara, Martin Short, Martin Landau, Charlie Tahan, Atticus Shaffer, Robert Capron, Conchata Ferrell and Winona Ryder
Director:                                               Tim Burton
Producers:                                            Tim Burton, Allison Abbate
Executive Producer:                              Don Hahn
Screenplay by:                                      John August
Based on a screenplay by:                    Lenny Ripps
Based on an original idea by:                 Tim Burton

From creative genius Tim Burton (“Alice in Wonderland,” The Nightmare Before Christmas”) comes “Frankenweenie,” a heartwarming tale about a boy and his dog. After unexpectedly losing his beloved dog Sparky, young Victor harnesses the power of science to bring his best friend back to life—with just a few minor adjustments. He tries to hide his home-sewn creation, but when Sparky gets out, Victor’s fellow students, teachers and the entire town all learn that getting a new “leash on life” can be monstrous.

A stop-motion animated film, “Frankenweenie” was filmed in black and white and rendered in 3D, which elevates the classic style to a whole new experience.

In Tim Burton’s “Frankenweenie” young Victor conducts a science experiment to bring his beloved dog Sparky back to life, only to face unintended, sometimes monstrous, consequences.

  • When Tim Burton originally conceived the idea for “Frankenweenie,” he envisioned it as a full-length, stop-motion animated film. Due to budget constraints, he instead directed it as a live-action short, released in 1984.
  • “Frankenweenie” follows in the footsteps of Tim Burton’s other stop-motion animated films “Corpse Bride” and “The Nightmare Before Christmas”—both of which were nominated for Academy Awards®.
  • Over 200 puppets and sets were created for the film.
  • The voice cast includes four actors who worked with Burton on previous films: Winona Ryder (“Beetlejuice,” “Edward Scissorhands”), Catherine O’Hara (“Beetlejuice,” “The Nightmare Before Christmas”), Martin Short (“Mars Attacks!”) and Martin Landau (“Ed Wood,” Sleepy Hollow”).
  • Classic horror films inspired several of the character names.

The Boy with Blue Hair

My daughter's latest collage

My daughter has had a boy 'friend' for two years.  They did everything together and swore up and down the didn't like each other 'that way!'  Everyone knew better, her friends, her family, his friends, his family... and we all rub it in liberally now that they do like each other thaaaaaat way.

This boy has blue hair.  He didn't always have blue hair, of course...and who am I to judge?  My own daughter, after all, has vegan (temporary all-natural) hair dye in her hair that has turned her gorgeous natural platinum blonde tresses to red (why are we never happy with what we have?).  Different hair colors... a new trend, I know.  I see pink, orange, green, yellow, and yes, blue hair all of the time coming out of the school doors.  I see it on the pop stars my daughter likes to listen too.  And I see it on the younger set on the television shows she likes to watch.  So it should have come as no surprise to find out she wanted to have her hair done in a different color (her dad's nicer than me, I said no).

I know it is the person who is important, not the hair, and I think my daughter's boyfriend (the boy with the blue hair) is a peach of a young man.  But I do feel a bit out of sorts when there are children running around with hair that is every color but their own. I remember my family not approving of boys with long hair, or ripped jeans.  They may have liked the kid, but not the style(s).  And now, a generation later, I'm faced with the same feelings, but now it's my daughter who thinks I'm the one out of date (how could this have happened?! lol), and just totally not with the times (I don't like the bangs in your face look that either of them like to sport either).  It's okay though... I know her day is coming too (when she someday has children of her own), so I can kick my feet up, drink my coffee, and smile as I listen to the pure joy coming out of her mouth when she talks about spending time with her new boyfriend...the young man everyone likes (including me!)...the boy with the blue hair.

Say What?!

My son is watching Scooby Doo and Velma (VELMA of all people) just said, "I feel your pain, dawg."

I'm not even kidding...

Scooby Doo has sure changed a lot since I was a kid.  ;)

The Christopher Chronicles: Age 5 - Book Review

"I am definitely too busy to take a nap."
-from The Christopher Chronicles:  Age 5

If you are a blogger you may have already heard of Kenya G. Johnson from the blog "Here's the Thing..." Her posts are great, and oftentimes hilarious.  Her stories about her workouts with her husband had me in stitches, and now every time someone says, "Here's the thing..." I think of her blog and laugh (in a good way).  :)

Johnson is also an author of the newly published book, her first, The Christopher Chronicles: Age 5.  Since I enjoy reading her blog so much, I had to go purchase the book.  It did not disappoint.  Anyone who has had a child in their lives will be able to relate to this one.  From the first page to the last, The Christopher Chronicles offers a glimpse into the curious and hilarious mind of a happy, vivacious 5-yr. old.  Lighthearted and easy to read, it is peppered with more than a modicum of wit, and I guarantee you're going to chuckle or even laugh out loud (more than once).

The Christopher Chronicles would be the perfect addition for any home library, and priced at just $10.99 on Amazon, it also makes a great gift idea (with the holidays fast approaching, you're going to want to keep this one in mind).

Supporting a fellow blogger whose work you enjoy is always fun, supporting one who is a great author too, is even better.

You can follow Johnson on her website found here, her blog, Facebook, Twitter, G+ and/or Pinterest.

    Wordless Wednesday (World's Luckiest Mom)

None of them even look the same & it was only 4 years ago.

The oldest is married with his own baby on the way; the second oldest graduated high school & is living on his own; my baby girl isn't a baby anymore; and the youngest started Kindergarten.  These pictures were quite probably the last set the kids will have taken together of just them.   Who knew?  :)

    For SAHMs

This post is for the Stay at Home Moms.  Not to impugn the importance of any other type of mom...I am just curious to ask this particular group of moms a question:  Are you busier as a Stay at Home Mom than you were when you were working full-time?

I had a job in higher education administration for years.  I loved it, and I was busy.  I also was a mom, a wife, and a full-time student.  But I still had time for me, the kids, playing, watching movies, reading my newspaper (yeah, I'm one of those people who likes an actual newspaper), etc.

Now that I am a stay-at-home mom, I've become ever so inventive in finding ways to pay my credit cards (because I wouldn't dare ask hubby or he'd banish them, given half of them have a balance and he's THE MOST FRUGAL person I've ever met <-- a very good quality, but one I don't so strictly possess).  I also go to school (well, I'm writing my dissertation, which is basically the same thing...sort of), and I'm a wife...and of course, a mom.  So, being at home you would think things would be easier, that I'd have more 'me' time, more time to relax?  Right?

My favorite newspapers were stacked so high (and unread) that I cancelled the costly subscription.  I'm constantly meeting deadlines, looking at a schedule of to-do things that is too congested, and chasing my tail to keep up.  I have to force myself to carve out play time, and remind myself often that my family is my priority, not the other things that matter, but don't matter as much.  And then there are the "unexpecteds" that pop a call from the school to get my child who fell off of the monkey bars and the subsequent discussion with the pediatrician; a very dear sick family member; a friend in need, etc.

I'm not complaining.  I like to be busy.  But I am curious, if you are a stay-at-home mom, is it a LOT busier than you daydreamed it was going to be?  I was thinking tons of play time with the little one, elaborate cooking, Mommy and Me classes, a little leisurely reading...hahahahahahahhahahahahhahahaha.  In retrospect, I should have known better, but wouldn't my fantasy world have been such a nice reality?!?  :)

My youngest just started school, so as soon as I finish  my dissertation, my stay-at-home life will be over.  But it sure was different than what I'd thought.

    How about you?

    Ornaments with Love Review/Giveaway

Ornaments with Love created this ornament for me (with  my son and his wife's name on it...the one in the picture is a demo), and I love it for several reasons.  First of all, it's sturdy...a nice thick, heavy ornament made of resin.  Second, it's very vibrant, the colors are fantastic!  Third, the details are adorable. My son and his wife are expecting their first child, so the gal in the ornament is expecting, with a cute noticeable baby bump, and the word 'Baby' with the arrow pointing down on her shirt.  Fourth, I love it because you can personalize it with names and the year, which I did.  And last, I like the "Great Expectations" on the bottom of the ornament for dual the huge event coming up, and two the Dickens novel.  I know, I know...don't laugh at me, but Dickens is huge in our house so we were delighted just the same.

There really is not one thing I would change about the ornament, and I think it's going to be one of my son and his wife's favorite Christmas gifts this year.

Ornaments with Love has a huge inventory and you can find an ornament to commemorate just about any occasion you could imagine; any work profession; any person in the family; many sports (I even found some for zip-lining!), and so on and so forth.  It's just a really great place to special order an ornament for the upcoming holidays.  And their prices are reasonable.  This ornament runs for $14.95.  That's more than a fair price, completely comparable to any ornament you could get elsewhere without personalization.  Ornaments with Love also has fast shipping and excellent customer service, and the ordering process is very simple (they walk you through it with fill-in boxes) prior to check-out.

You can browse through the 2,000+ ornaments they have available in their catalog here.  You can also follow Ornaments with Love on Facebook.

Ornaments with Love has agreed (thank you, Ornaments with Love!) to give one Mail4Rosey reader any personalized ornament of their choice, woo hoo!  Whether you're looking for an ornament that is fun, whimsical, nostalgic, family-oriented, business-related, or anything in between, it is my guess that Ornaments with Love is going to have something you love.  US entrants only.

Disclaimer:  I received one ornament for review purposes only.  No other compensation took place.  The opinions stated were entirely my own.

    Safety Cutter Review & Giveaway

    Safety Cutter

The Slice Cutter is small, a little over the size of a half-a-dollar, but it's powerful, one of those little tools that makes you remember the saying, "Good things come in small packages."  My husband wanted to see it when I opened it, and ran around finding things to cut open (he actually enjoyed it, "Ok, honey, look at this one," he said while opening the plastic around a DVD.").

The blade is encompassed in a rubberized no-slip shell, and the ceramic blade is at the very bottom (not visible like a dangerous utility knife or box cutter).  You hold it parallel to what you're cutting and it works like a charm (don't hold it at an angle or it doesn't work as well).  My husband opened a box, tape on a box, plastic packaging, and the aforementioned plastic shrink wrap on a DVD.  Then he got fancy and cut shapes out of paper (and it worked GREAT, which makes it a neat tool for scrapbooking or cutting out coupons!).

Because the blade is ceramic, it's going to stay sharp, last longer than metal, and it will never rust.  Another cool feature is that it has a magnet inside, so it can hang from the side of your refrigerator if you want it to (no more wondering where something went when you need it).  It also has a key chain hole if you want to tote it along with your keys.

    Ceramic Blade

The product is made by Slice, whose specialty is making things that cut, and cut well.  They make scissors (from Japanese stainless steel), a nifty ceramic-blade fruit/vegetable peeler, various vase mills for grinding, and even a cosmetic pencil sharpener.  They also make some pretty nifty tweezers, one type of which was featured in Vanity Fair magazine.

I like the idea of ceramic instead of metal for cutting.  It just seems safer to me (especially if you have children in the house), so I am really intrigued by this company and their products.

You can read more about Slice on their website.  You can also follow them on Facebook or Twitter.

One reader is going to receive the same Safety Cutter that I reviewed (thank you Slice!).  Enter on the Rafflecopter below.  Winner will be randomly selected and notified via e-mail.  Winner will have 48 hours to respond or a new winner will be selected.

     a Rafflecopter giveaway

Disclaimer:  Two safety cutters were sent to me (one for review and one to send to the randomly selected winner of this giveaway).  No other form of compensation took place, and the opinions are entirely my own.

My New Blog Button & a Crafty Question

I've been holding off on creating/getting a blog button...waiting until I could get what I knew I really wanted.  I'm not very creative, so... I was hoping to find someone else to do it for me.

Really, I wasn't actively looking, but I was looking, if that makes sense.
When I entered a giveaway at Katherine's Corner I saw that she also had three home businesses, one of which she uses in part to create blog buttons for the uncrafty like me.  It's not that I don't like crafts, au contraire, I love them!  I'm just not good at making them myself...thankfully my Kindergartner doesn't know this yet and still really likes the things we make together (one day he'll know the truth, just as he'll learn I can't sing worth a lick either).  Ah... how I dread the day he reaches those revelations.  ;)

So...I asked Katherine if she would make me a button.  She agreed and in no time flat (really it was all such a super fast transaction), I had a blog button that I love.

Now I'm curious about the rest of you.  If you have a button, did you create your own?  Or did you have it made for you?

There are so many things to see in the blogging world, and crafts are top on the list of marvels I come across all.of.the.time!  It never ceases to amaze me what wonderful creations people come up with in the bloggy world.  I've seen some INCREDIBLE birthday cakes, some excellent Fall decorations, out of this WORLD furniture restorations, and some pretty spectacular photographs.  What are some of  the great crafts you've come across while perusing other blogs?  Or maybe something great that you've made and showcased on your own blog?  I'd love to see or hear about it (feel free to leave a link or picture, I'm totally in the mood to enjoy other people's creations today!).

Happy Monday all, and a big thank you to Katherine from Katherine's Corner!
