There are lots of things that need to be done before your kids head off to school every morning. As any parent will know, the morning routine is an absolute rush. You’re running around the place getting so many things in order before almost dragging your children outside to get them there on time.
Amongst the many morning jobs on your plate, there’s one thing a lot of parents never consider. As you can tell by the title, we’re talking about applying sunscreen to your kids. This is big for us because we live in a state that's hot and my son is outside every day for PE. Even if you're not in a hot state though, why is this a thing you should be doing every morning?
Protect your children
Did you know that skin cancer is the most common cancer in the US? It’s a genuine problem, and one of the worst things is that it’s probably the most preventable cancer too. Most people with skin cancer will get it because of exposure to UV rays. This is where sunscreen becomes important.
If you apply it to your kids before school every morning, you give them a layer of protection against the sun. It’s especially important during the sunnier periods, but you should keep doing it throughout the year too. You’re doing your bit to protect your kids and stop them from potentially devastating problems in the future. If you are ever worried about your child’s skin or notice any dramatic changes, it’s good to get a skin cancer screening just to be safe.
Improve their skin
Sunscreen is also really good at improving your child’s skin. Kids can have lots of skin conditions when they’re younger, especially things like eczema or dry skin. Getting into the habit of applying sunscreen each morning offers protection, and in many cases, moisture.
Therefore, your kid’s skin will remain soft and healthy, possibly avoiding a lot of these common skin conditions for children. At the same time, it just makes their daily life better as they won’t be scratching at dry skin all day!
Encourage a good habit
Lastly, you will encourage good habits in your children by doing this every day before school. As they get older, the idea of applying sunscreen becomes normal to them. It’s something they continue to do daily because mom and dad did it when they were kids. This means they continue to protect themselves against skin cancer and other skin conditions.
Then, when they’re old enough to have kids, they pass this habit down to them. It encourages generations of great skincare habits in your family, which can prevent a lot of nasty problems from happening.
I know, I know, your morning routine is already pretty hectic. You have to get the kids out of bed, dress them, feed them, make their lunch boxes, and so on. How can you add this extra step into your routine?! Well, it isn’t going to take long at all. You can add it in while they are getting dressed - it will take a few seconds to apply the sunscreen to them. Even if it means waking up a tiny bit earlier, it is worth it because of the long-term benefits for your kids.
I didn't even think of this, but it's great advice.
ReplyDeleteHave a fabulous day and week, my friend. Big hug. ♥
It's great advice especially for those of us living in the tropics.
ReplyDeleteHappy Tuesday, Rosey 🌹
I admit, I was horrible about doing this with my kids. Looking back, I wish I would have though!
