--- 7 Tips to Help You Through Tough Times

Life is good and most of us will enjoy living life to the full most of the time, but it is fair to say that there is not a human on earth who will not experience tough and challenging times in their lives too.

None of us can avoid getting into difficult circumstances that make it hard for us to fully enjoy life from time to time, but when we are going through something hard, there is always hope that things will get better, and there are lots of things we can do to help ourselves cope and overcome our life’s challenges in a way that is healthy and effective.

Below are some effective tips to help you get through the tough times in life whenever they rear their head, and in whatever form they may take:

1. Rember this too shall pass

One of the most useful phrases, when you are going through a tough time, is “This too shall pass.” When you're struggling with feelings of hopelessness and despair, it is always worth reminding yourself that you have gone through tough times before and you have always gotten through them in the past. It is also worth reminding yourself that everyone you know has gone through tough times and come out the other side stronger for it. Tough times will pass, remember that and avoid catastrophizing and thinking that you will always feel the way you do right now.

2. Talk to God

If you are a believer, then you can get a lot of strength and comfort from offering up your problems to God. Don’t be afraid to pray on the matter and let God know about your feelings of hopelessness and despair. He can offer a lot of comfort in tough times and give you the power you need to get through them in a healthy way, no matter how difficult your troubles may seem to be.

3. Stay positive

It can be difficult when you are going through a hard time, but if you can make a real effort to stay positive, then it will definitely help you to duffer less and get back on track more quickly.

Whenever you have a negative thought, try reframing it into your mind into something more positive. For example, you might be feeling upset about losing your job and you might be thinking that you are a failure who will never be able to support your family again. Try reframing this job loss as an opportunity for growth; a chance to find your true calling in life and spend more time with your family in the meantime. Thre is always a positive to be found and by focusing on that, rather than dwelling on the negative, you will certainly suffer less.

4. Talk it out

There is no need to suffer alone when you have friends, family members, church buddies, therapists, and so many other friendly and caring people who would be more than happy to listen to yot problems and offer you the support you need to get through them.

Trying to deal with tough times alone might seem like the right thing to do because it means you won’t be burdening anyone else with your problems, but that is your stress and depression talking - most people are loving and caring and will want to help you as best they can, and just knowing you have people you can rely on can really help to hold you up and help you to get through whatever it is that id making life hard for you right now. Let people in and you will be amazed at how much of a difference it can make, in the best possible way.

5. Do something you love

You might be going through tough times right now, whether it be a bereavement, a job loss, or struggles with debt, but that does not mean that you should make your every waking moment about the thing you are struggling with.

Sure, it can be hard to put your problem out of your mind, but if you take the tie to do something you truly love, whether it be watching a favorite TV show, volunteering at the local soup kitchen, or practicing a hobby like art or knitting, you will find moments where you are so focused on what you are doing that you forget your problems, and in those moments you wl find peace. Taking your mind off your troubles does not mean that you ignore them, only that you get some respite from them and go after the happiness that you deserve.

6. Serve others

When you are having a hard time, one of the best things you can possibly do is get out there and help others. Whether you start collecting food for the needy people in your community, you help out at an animal shelter or you offer your expertise to help aspiring young students get the skills they need to succeed in life, doing what you can to make a difference in the world will show you just how valuable you are, as well as showing you how much everyone struggles from time to time. Not only that but it will give your life more meaning and value, and when time sare hard, it is always worth being reminded of how precious your life is.

7. Hold on

Most of us will not overcome our struggles overnight, so you need to understand that it will take time and you need to commit to doing the work to get back to a healthy state of mind. You need to be willing to not give up no matter how hard things get, and things will eventually get better for you.

When you are going through a tough time, it is really important that you keep a positive mindset, stay strong and do whatever you can to get through it. The above ideas will absolutely help you to do that. There is nothing that you cannot get through.

  2. I would add an eighth tip. Seek help if you are unable to move forward. Help from family, friends, and/or professionals.

  4. "This too shall pass" is something I say often. Sometimes it's hard to stay positive but talking about things definitely helps.

    1. Thanks for sharing your article. I was happy when I wrote this and not going through anything. Yesterday I found out my bff's husband had a heart attack, and I live 1200 miles away and can't be there for her. They've been together so many years and I know she is very sad/worried. And just like that, we're going through something. Everyone does at some point. Coping points matter.

  10. I do think talking it out is so important, I agree that a problem shared is a problem halved, sometimes it's all you need. But staying positive and doing what you love is good advice too x

  11. Doing things for others is definitely a great way to get you through tough times. It really reminds you that other peopel out there are struggling, too, and you can do something about that.

    1. During my most difficult time, I volunteered a LOT. It made me feel useful, and it did help so much to make sure others had a slice of peace in their day. Sometimes just a conversation would be all they needed and you could see the relief flood through them. Getting my mind off of me, and helping others get their mind off of whatever they were going through was doubly therapeutic.

  16. I have a prayer journal that I try to write in a few times a week but it has brought me comfort especially during those times of overwhelming anxiety/depression. Lots of great tips here and they really do help.
