Visiting New York City? Take the Time to go see STOMP!

Here is the last of the 'he said/she said' reviews from my son and his girlfriend who just got back home from a European holiday that they ended with a stay-over in New York City. There were a few thousand things they wanted to do while they were in the Big Apple, though time would only permit a few, all of which turned out to be favorites; strolling Central Park, eating NYC's pizza (it's so good!) and seeing STOMP! the live show where artists invigorate and inspire by creating music out of every day things.

Let's go traditional, and start with ladies first. :)

Kiera (she) Said:

The Stomp! show was the highlight of my trip in New York City (next to eating pizza). Josh and I got to the show a little late due to jet lag complications (slight interjection from Joshua  ** scoffs at jet lag delay more like Kiera wouldn’t wake up to leave on time delay) but they were so accommodating! We showed up and they had our tickets waiting for us at will-call. They lead us to our seats in the cute and quaint Orpheum theater. As soon as we sat down the next act began.

I was immediately swept away by the creativity, ingenuity and talent it took to put on this show. They used every prop you could think of that you would find out on the streets of a city to make the most amazing beats and songs. They used anything from basketballs, to shopping carts, to turning giant trash cans into walking boots to make noises. My favorite part was when they stood in a line and made an entire performance out of lighters, using the sound and lights while the room was completely dark. They even had crowd participation where the audience would repeat the claps and stomps they would do so we could pretend we had rhythm as well. The overall experience was exhilarating…….

Joshua (he) said:

Josh here (cracks fingers in preparation to allow the true experience of the Stomp show to flow through my finger tips ….slight creative break to re-read Kiera’s viewpoint, followed by a slight disgruntled murmur under my breath) there is not much else to say, she is pretty spot-on about the show.

I think the only thing I can truly add to her review that to me personally solidifies how special the show really is, was walking around the streets of New York city after the velour stage curtains were dropped...as crowded as those streets were, you could easily pick out the jubilant faces of the people who were also in the audience of the show. Watching fathers with their sons, mothers with their daughters; laughing together, hitting the rolled up playbill against their hand, comically trying to beat box, tossing things in the air in an attempt to mimic the creativity of the show... to me that was the thing that stuck out the most.

The show, albeit the prelude was missed, was undoubtedly amazing, however seeing the joy families got to share because of it was immeasurably more. In today's day and age you seldom see family’s actually interacting together. Faces that otherwise would probably be pressed against a phone were replaced with smiles and laughter and that's what Stomp is. It is something so special and unique that if only for a moment, it breaks the mundane cycle of texting, Snapping and Tweeting and it lets a family share an authentically enjoyable experience together. So in short: Highly recommended! And in the spirit of show biz there is only one proper way to wrap up this review ……….FIN
