Affordable Necessities

So happy to welcome a guest writer today! Please help them feel welcome.

It’s a frustrating truth: Companies will markup items that are necessities, and even more for items that are considered luxuries. Instead of paying full retail price for the items that you need, look online for discount websites and other deals like coupon codes. It might surprise you how much money you can save in the long run.

Where’d You Get Those Peepers?

As a glasses-wearer, you’re already spending extra money on eye appointments and new prescriptions, not to mention the added cost of frames. It doesn’t have to cost hundreds of dollars to achieve the look you want; search for discount glasses online and find something you love for a fraction of the price!

Undergarments

Everyone (hopefully) wears underwear, but women have the added cost of needing to wear a bra as well. These over-the-shoulder-boulder-holders are heartbreakingly expensive, but they are a necessary item for most women. Instead of spending your hard-earned money on something that will eventually stab you in the chest anyway, look for discounted bras.
  • A simple Google search for "clearance bras” will yield a bunch of results from various brands. Pick the one you trust and start comparing prices.
  • Buying one really good bra instead of a dozen cheap ones might save you more money in the long run. Search for websites that offer customizable options, since not all women are shaped exactly the same. It will cost you money, but it is money well-spent!

Sheets and Linens

Sure, Ralph Lauren’s bedsheets are dreamy and boast the logo, but does it really matter where you buy your bedclothes? Rather than spend too much at department stores like Macy’s and JC Penney, look at other options.
  • Hotels and restaurants will oftentimes purchase their items from Costco, groceries and otherwise. If blankets and sheets are good enough for a five-star hotel, then you’re bringing that same luxury home for a bargain.
  • If the idea of buying secondhand sheets and blankets doesn’t gross you out, why not check out shops like Goodwill? You can often find cool, good-quality linens that look like new — just remember to run everything through the washing machine before you put it on your bed!
It’s annoying to be taken advantage of by The Man, but defy the system by doing what you can to save your pennies on staples. You might have to search a little, but finding a great deal on an expensive item has a satisfaction all its own.

  5. There are some very affordable eyeglasses online, a lot less expensive then the vision centers. I hate that bras are expensive, no form of underwear should cost so much.

I am mostly homebound so most of my shopping is done online. I will take your advice and be more vigilant in looking for discounts online. I agree with buying a good, longer lasting bra that fits well than cheap ones that are uncomfortable and wear out easily.

  11. I'm with Alissa. I haven't had an eye exam for 3 years. I am dreading the cost of glasses since I just shelled out a ton of money for the girls to get new ones this summer. I really should dig online for discounts on a new pair. I don't care how they look as long as I can see lol
