5 Fun Birthday Gift Ideas for Under $20!

Disclosure: This is a sponsored post. All opinions stated are genuine and my own.

It is officially birthday party season over here. Why? Because my son is back to school, and when school is in session, the invites come left and right. Of course you want to go to the party with a fun and/or useful gift the birthday child will love, but once you've had a couple invitations under your belt, you realize it can get expensive quick. With a few items on hand, all that ring in under twenty bucks, you can rest easy and know that when the next party invite arrives, you've got the gift covered. All items below can be purchased in a jiffy as well, by using the Amazon Prime app.

#1). Let me start off with the Playfoam Pals from Educational Insights. This is my first choice because a). It's a perfect birthday gift, meaning the recipient is going to be happy b). If your child is 5-years-of-age + (not younger, choking hazard) they are probably going to love Playfoam. I have a 5-year-old in the fam., and a 10-year-old who both LOVE THIS STUFF. Last weekend my 19-year-old was visiting, and she wanted one of these as soon as she saw them sitting on the table. c). There is a hidden surprise inside of each one!

#2).  Rhino Hero from HABA (in fact, anything from HABA including the awesome kids' binoculars I wrote about here would be an excellent gift selection to have on hand for birthdays!). Kids love games and this one, for ages 5+ is unusual in a good way, stored in a small box which makes it easy to bring along and/or store, and is a lot of fun to play at the party, or afterwards when the birthday boy or girl gets home.

It's a bird! It's a plane! It's Super Rhino! No building too high, no street too dangerous for this caped crusader, as he scales buildings and patrols the city protecting the citizens. On his quest for safety, he must use caution as even the most solid buildings may start to sway and wobble. Can you help Super Rhino accomplish the challenge to build a skyscraper as tall and solid as can be?

Age range: 5 years+

MSRP: $14.99

#3). HIGHLIGHTS!! with a twist.

This is the same Highlights I grew up loving. Oh yes, I did have a subscription and I always looked forward to it arriving in the mail. The 'twist' is that this version is write-on, wipe-off and has the included dry erase type of pen.

It's still chock full of the fun stories and activities you loved as a kid, but now that you can write on it and erase, it can be used over and over again (instead of a one-time use and then you are done). You can see in the photo above that Highlights has utilized that feature well by offering children practice in such things as writing, colors, letters and more.

The faves are still in there, like 'spot the difference,'

and follow the tangled line to the right place on the page. This is such a perfect gift for the littles!! I know my nephew is getting one on his big day!

Product Description: Write-On Wipe-Off Fun to Learn Activity Books feature reusable pages and a Highlights-branded marker (with a wipe-clean eraser) in a hidden wire-o spiral binding that lays flat. Kids love that they can write, draw, and puzzle all over these books, and parents and teachers love that kids can keep practicing essential skills—again and again! With the Write-on Wipe-Off Let’s Write Words kids can practice tracing and writing words while enjoying the book’s fun activities.

Product Features + Benefits:
  • Little ones who are learning to write will enjoy this activity book’s mix of puzzle fun plus writing practice.
  • Each 2-page spread is an amusing puzzle on one side and related words to copy on the other.
  • It’s a dry-erase book, for reusable practice, and spiral-bound so it lies flat for no-hassle writing.
  • Each write-on wipe-off page features a variety of puzzle types: Hidden Pictures® scenes, matching, mazes and more, to make it fun to write and learn sight words.
  • Parent guide on the front inside coverage gives parents tips on how to use the book so kids become more comfortable with high frequency words.
Age Range: Ages 3-6

MSRP: $12.99

#4). Bathtime doesn't have to be a challenge when you have Disney Baby Soapsox to rub-a-dub-dub with...what child doesn't love a soft, colorful plush? Especially true if it's Disney! Help encourage cleaning up in the bath with these adorable soapsox that are so easy to use. Simply pour soap/body wash in the opening on the back, add it to water and wash away!! One beautiful thing to note: these are machine washable!

These are really so cute! Hello there to ya, Soapsox Mickey!

Product Description: The new SoapSox® Disney Baby line of bath toys feature some of Disney’s most beloved characters including: Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Ariel and Flounder from The Little Mermaid, as well as, Nemo and Squirt from Finding Nemo. SoapSox® drenched the bath toy market in 2013 when it introduced its lovable 2-in-1 stuffed animal washcloths. Now kids can cuddle their favorite stuffed Disney Baby companions during the day and then play with them during bath time at night for added fun in the tub. Snuggle, cuddle, and play together all day and when it’s time for your bath, bring them with you! A patented soap pocket transforms lovable SoapSox® into sudsy wash cloth – just add soap and scrub.

Product Features + Benefits:
  • Easy for Parents and Fun for Kids
  • “Feed” SoapSox liquid or bar soap
  • Built in finger pockets
  • Eases anxiety for nervous bathers
  • Soft terry cloth exterior and an antimicrobial sponge interior
  • Machine washable
Age Range: Birth +
Available Characters:  Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Ariel, Flounder, Nemo and Squirt
MSRP: $12.99

#5). And last, but certainly not least, Plus Plus Building Sets, made in Denmark! These sturdy building pieces come in a travel-friendly tube (though we had a hard time getting the lid off initially!) and they are really fun for creating with the directions or going it freestyle.

You can get different 'characters' or you can get a tube that is just general (build what you like). Of course, even the designated characters can be turned into whatever it is you want to build with them at the moment. I can see these being a big hit as a birthday gift. I also see them as being ideal for birthday gift bags. This is a great way to get the kids to sit at the table and build for a few minutes, while you get the cake ready to come out for singing (keeps the kiddos at the table instead of having to round them all up). :)

The instructions if you opt to use them, are pretty straightforward and the pieces STAY TOGETHER until you take them apart. I thought I would address that, because with game pieces that look like jigsaw puzzle pieces, that could be a challenge. Thankfully, it's not. These are made well.

I am going to be honest and say these are a lot more fun than I thought they would be. My son enjoyed building with them, and so did I.

Product Description: This 70 piece travel-friendly tube is a screen-free boredom buster for the whole family. Use the enclosed idea guide to build a spinning top, people, trees, flowers and more! Or, use your imagination and build in 2D or 3D. It's one shape with endless possibility!

Product Features + Benefits:
  • Travel-friendly
  • Made in Denmark
  • Inspires open-ended creativity
  • Engages users for hours
Age Range: 5+ Years
Colors Mixes Available: Basic, Neon, Pastel, Camo, Patriotic, Grayscale, Water and Earth
MSRP: $6.99-7.99

I, too, loved Highlights growing up. I remember piles of them at the doctor's or dentist offices. I'm so happy to see it is still around.

You can never go wrong with Highlights. I loved and looked forward to this magazine every month. It's great that they are now write on/wipe off so they can last!

These are all great gifts for young children and I can see how every single one of them can either teach them something new or develop their agility, creativity and skills. Great choices!

Sure some great ones indeed. As yeah, parties can break the bank if you aren't careful. Playfoam would be fun to give a go.

My kids would love the playfoam thing at the top. They are always trying to find things to make into nests for their little animals. It would be nice if it wasn't always shredded paper. They might also like the bottom ones to. They love to play Legos and this is like a puzzle type version of it.

This is a great ideal. Nothing like picking up something when you don't need it and placing it in a drawer for when you do need it. There are several items here I just might amazon today
