Six DIY Projects You Can Build This Weekend

Sometimes it feels like the weekend is never going to arrive. We have so many great plans for our time away from work, but then the weekend arrives and we don’t actually do all the awesome things we said we were going to do. If you think this weekend is going to be anything like your last few weekends: streaming internet videos about cats and eating cold pizza, then why not use your weekend time to build a fun project. Here are six do-it-yourself projects you can building this weekend.

Design and Build a Storage Space

Everyone needs more storage space. In a few hours, you can built a custom shelf for your home office or family room and finish it with paint or stain. It’s basically just a box with a back on it and a few shelves. Give it a whirl.

Refinish Picture Frames

If the family photos on the wall are starting to look a little dated, consider that it might not be the pictures, but the frames that house the pictures. Pull them off the wall and spray paint them in a trendy color like rose gold or silver. Instant wow for your walls.

Build Something Electric

If you like to tinker with electronics, try your hand at building a mountain board, or adding a small motor to your bicycle to turn it into an electric bicycle. A few tools, some batteries and some wires and you can whip up a mini motor for your boards and bikes.

Sand and Paint a Dresser

If your bedroom furniture is starting to look a little worn, you can use fine sandpaper to take the finish off your furniture and repaint it or stain it so it looks like completely new furniture. This is a bit of a bigger job, but you can definitely finish a bedroom set in a weekend.

Plant a Garden

If the nice weather has made its way to you, spend some time sprucing up your garden this weekend. It’s a great way to get some fresh air and make your property look more alive and beautiful. Gardening, while time consuming, is quite inexpensive and can be very rewarding in the long run.

Start the Book You’ve Been Meaning To Start

The ultimate do-it-yourself project is starting that book you’ve been meaning to start. While you might not be able to finish a novel in a weekend, you can certainly get a good start on it. And who knows, it might become your weekend retreat project. Start with a few chapters and see where it goes from there. If that seems to overwhelming, think about writing a book like writing a series of longer blog posts. Give each blog a title and just start writing. Eventually, you’ll have an entire book of blog posts you can refashion to turn into a book!

Remember - when the weekend rolls around, find something to keep yourself busy so you don’t just waste away the time. Make a list and start checking things off the list. You’ll find that your weekends start to become more rewarding each week that passes.

  6. Love the idea of planting a garden. Children can learn a lot about that experience and put in practice what they learn in biology class at school.
