How to Create the Perfect DIY Pet Door

My oldest son is about the handiest guy I know. He'll walk in the house on a visit and one of the first things he says after, "Hi Mama, Love you" is "what kind of work do you have for me to do around here?" I always have a list for him... ;) The one exception is if  it's a short visit. He lives out of state, so if he's not going to be here long, then I refuse to let him do anything (I like to spend all the time I can with him if he's just popping in and popping out). If I had a pet, installing a pet door would definitely be something I would want to consider, and my son would be the one I would recruit to do it, because I know he'd do it right. I bet he'd be glad to do it too, and the instructions below would be just the ones we would use.

If you're considering a pet door, and want to do-it-yourself, then this is the infographic for you! If you use it, I'd love to hear how it worked out!

I am so not handy, but if it were to have something like this done, it would be my brother to the rescue for this, as he is the handiest person I know here. 😉

We don't have a pet door, but around here we have a leash law so our dog cannot go outside unless he's on the leash. I guess that kind of eliminates the need for one :-)

Seems easy enough, I'd never have one with the two cats as they are far too skiddish to go outdoors. Plus I'd be afraid raccoons or something would sneak in

I have always contemplated a pet door

This feels above my personal handy-level, but I'm sure a friend could install this if we needed it. I can't imagine how BIG the door would have to be to fit our bulldog's shoulders :) :)

That is so great! I love this because you covered everything so thoroughly. Thanks so much for this. We've been thinking about getting a doggy door, and I know my husband would rather build something like this.

What a great guide. I think If I had pets I would want them to be able to go in and out when they felt like it.

And you don't have to take them out to potty anymore either, they can do that when they want. Way cool.

Have a fabulous day. ☺

Such a fun infographic. The students here have to make one. I love what they come up with.

Nice pet door.

I would love to have one, but we have full glass on every door in our house :( I get my exercise by letting 3 dogs in and out all day long!

And, if you have a big dog, make sure that a small and agile human can't shimmy through that dog door. One of my friends had her house broken into that way.

This is such a cool idea. Why buy it when you can make it. Thanks!

I love pet doors but I've never wanted to buy one. Making one this way would be perfect.

Aww it's so sweet that he still likes to help around the house even though he has moved out :)

I would love one of these! I would however be scared my very, very curious cat would go out though! My dogs? Would love a door for themselves though!

I follow a pinterest humor board called "Nailed it." If I tried this, I'm sure I'd have something worthy of adding to this board.

This sounds like a job for the guy around here! It's all spelled out quite nicely.

What a good idea. Pet doors can be quite expensive, so this is great.

We need a pet door desperately. But, we also need a fence as well. My dogs are good about not running off, but I would hate for them to go out and I don't know. Then not be able to find them.

This is such a great DIY project. I've wanted to build a cat door leading to the garage, now I know how. THANKS

Oh my! This is a great project. Looks a bit daunting for me though, but I am not a quitter. Lol. Love the new look of your blog by the way

Your son is a blessing :)

My hubs made a pet door for our kittens too. Thank God or they'd have been given away! I couldn't live with their poop box inside the house!

This instruction seems workable.
