Finally Friday!

Woot! I love the weekend, and it's almost here!

My husband's alarm for work has gone off at least 62 times this morning (very slight exaggeration). After the regular alarm started sounding, his iPad alarm starting sound too.  It hurts my ears three rooms away, I have no idea how he can keep sleeping through it.

Kid Carnival tonight at the elementary school. No one wants to go but me and the little man, but we're going to fun it up, let me tell you. It's not often you get to go to a carnival when it's cold outside like it is right now. :)

2-hour school delay this morning for cold.  We're at our number limit for days off, so I guess they're playing it safe.  Not sure if I'd like the extra day added later, or if I'd prefer the late day.  I wonder how understanding businesses are for their employees coming in late on weather delay days/ snow days.  I imagine some are not so very understanding.

My teen daughter seems more interested in building relationships these days

than she is in studying and school.

I for one, am not diggin' it. ;)  I'm noticing big differences already in raising a teen girl, over raising teen boys. Not bad things, just big ones (differences).

Counting down to the weekend now, it's just a few hours away.  Happy Friday, all!!

Gluten-Free with Canyon Bakehouse (review and giveaway)

Disclosure: I received product samples to help facilitate the review. All opinions stated are genuine and my own.

Canyon Bakehouse, located in Loveland, Colorado, is a bakery dedicated to making Gluten-Free bread that has the consistency of traditional bread, and tastes delicious. The website touts the following features of their freshly baked items:

  • Certified Gluten Free
  • Made in a dedicated Gluten Free Bakery
  • Dairy, Nut, & Soy Free (if egg is present, it is clearly noted)
  • GMO-Free

I hear about Gluten-Free all of the time, and I have been more than just a little curious to learn more about it. One thing that seems consistent, through my non-direct affiliation with it, is that it's hard to find Gluten-free items that appeal to those who don't have to eat it. Canyon Bakehouse is on a mission to make that no longer true.

Regular multi-grain bread on the left.
Canyon Bakehouse 7-Grain Gluten Free Bread on the right.
We were sent a box of Canyon Bakehouse items to try.  I was curious to get started right away, so the next morning I made my way to the 7-grain bread to toast up a hearty breakfast. In the house we also had a loaf of multi-grain bread, so I took a slice out to compare the two. They looked the same to me, but there were a couple of differences.

With the 7-Grain Gluten-Free bread, you can actually see and taste the grains. I liked that, a lot. The textures between the two were very similar, though the Gluten-Free was a bit more spongy...just a tad, and it did not deter from the flavor. My husband had 7-grain toast with his breakfast later that morning, and he said the same thing.  The gluten free bread took longer to toast too, which Ann from Foodie in WV (she has a lot of Gluten free recipes that look soooo good over at her place) assured me in an impromptu discussion we just had, is not out of the ordinary.

While you could tell the difference between the traditional loaf of bread we buy that has Gluten, and the Canyon Bakehouse loaf that was Gluten-free, both of us agreed that the Gluten-Free selection was not all that distinguishable from the bread we already had in the house. It was my first experience with anything baked intentionally Gluten-Free, and I'm glad I had it.

Redweek.com (review & 2 year membership giveaway)

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.

A lot of families really like to travel, and ours is no exception.  99% of the time we stay in a hotel when we are on the go, but I have always been curious about other options.  Redweek.com offers a place where timeshares can be purchased from people who would like to sell. It also offers the opportunity for members to contact the timeshare owners to rent out property all over the world for various amounts of time.

We are a family on a budget, so the cost advantage to such a service is something that definitely captured my attention, so... for kicks and grins, I started poking around the website.

The first search I put in was Hawaii.  Right away I saw a message that noted there is no middle man, no commission, and no tours, ever. Not being familiar with timeshares (other than knowing my in-laws have had a few in their time), I do not know the importance of that statement, but it's the first thing you see, and it's in bold font, so I thought I would mention it. :)

The second thing I saw was a lot of great choices for timeshare rentals currently available in Hawaii. The site makes it easy to break your choices down into what exactly it is you are looking to find.  You can search by location or resort name. I have no clue what resort we'd like, so I went for the location. My husband wants to visit Honolulu, so that was the first choice I put into the search engine. I narrowed it down to rentals.

One example of a search I did. This Hilton resort has 20 reviews, and 63 timeshare rentals available for the months listed.
The prices are significantly lower than if you were renting a room directly from the resort. I checked.
The example I am showing, and it was just a random pick because I know the Hilton name, showed 37 pictures of the resort, gave an in-depth description of it, showed the customer reivews, and gave you a map layout of the rooms and where your rental would be located.

The price on Redweek.com for the particular rental we selected was $895 for 6 nights ($149 per night).  The price on the direct website for the same dates, same room occupancy, same room type, was 'from $364 per night.' THAT is a big difference.

The owner name and a way to contact him/her (for the rental) is provided on Redweek.com when you are a member.

I did see a photo on Redweek.com that said Hawaii from $57 a night, so if I wanted to do some more digging, I bet I could have shaved off the cost of lodging even more.

The Orlando Resort I found for $64 a night had all good rating (4.5 stars out of 5 from 20 reviewers)
& a pool that was gorgeous!  Source: Redweek.com

The second search I did was for Orlando.  We are overdue for a trip to Disney World (my youngest was so young he doesn't even remember going), so to the search engines I did go. The only nights available during Spring Break (which I selected in my daydream of planning a trip during that time frame) were for one week stays.  We wouldn't stay 7 days, that is too long for us, but for people looking for an all out vacation in Orlando during Spring Break, the least expensive selection in my search was $64 a night, for 7 nights. That's amazing, and the many reviewers who had stayed there gave it very high ratings.  That was not for a small two-bed hotel room either, it was an all out resort with a full kitchen, DVD player, living area, and patio. The swimming pool for that particular resort is pictured above, and it was really gorgeous.

I am planning to poke around some more to see what I can find that might fit our potential travel plans for the summer.

I think my favorite thing, besides the generous photographs and customer ratings, is the rich descriptions.  Each description tells you if there are other fees associated. For example the one above said 'no additional taxes or fees apply, and free parking.' I like that because the last thing I want to come across on a trip is hidden fees.

I haven't used this service directly, but I am thinking about it, and will continue to look around and see what kind of deals are offered for the time frames we have to travel.  The rental and purchase options available are worldwide, so maybe this will be something we can use for our next trip abroad!!

If something like this is of interest to you, I am having a very short giveaway for a 2-year membership to Redweek.com for free.  That means you can poke and peruse the sight at your leisure and take advantage of the savings for two full years.  This is a super fast giveaway, so be sure to get your entry in if you are interested!

Who knows what kind of great deals you might find!

All Caught Up (for now).

A year ago I took a class and got an 'Incomplete.' The weather did not cooperate w/a tight deadline we had to interview a superintendent and a principal (and the rest of the class built upon those interviews).

That class is only offered once a year, which means I have to make up my 'Incomplete' now.

I've not had actual homework for awhile, and I keep forgetting that I'm in a class!!! Who does that (never mindthat is a rhetorical question)?!?!?

Tonight though, by pure coincidence, hubby did the kid and movie thing (in the living room), and I got 100% caught up, woo hoooooooo!

Did I mention, wooo hooo????

I think I shan't forget from this point on, that I am enrolled in a class, not after all the work I just did to get caught up.

Feels good.
Gotta love the little things.

Thanks, Hubs!!

ToyTainer Products

Disclosure: We received sample(s) to help facilitate the review. All opinions stated are genuine and my own.

Available Exclusively at Target
Last week I wrote a bit about ToyTainer products, and a Games Center Fold N'Go my son received (and loves, by the way!).  Today I am just going to write a bit about the other unique products ToyTainer has, all designed to make clean up & storage time fun.  These toys are designed to suit both boys and girls, ages 2-8, and they combine play time and pack up time, leaving free time for mom (or dad). Kids won't mind cleaning up when they have items like these to offer a playful assist.

Available for $19.99 at Target
The ToyTainer EZMat is a washable, water-proof mat that has an interactive background for playing. It also has lots of room for wrap-and-go storage, being 48" in size. It offers easy open/close for little ones, and a sturdy strap for carrying and/or hanging.  This would be great at home, or great for travel!!  My son's Kindergarten teacher has one for her classroom and she loves it.

The Arcade Depot Grab N'Store

Available Exculsively at Target

The  Toytainer vehicles come in Ice Cream Truck, Bulldozer, or Fire Truck versions.  These are nice because you can play with them as a vehicle, or you can store toys inside the roomy containers. The inside of each of these is a storage chest. The storage area in the bulldozer is removable and has a handle (like a handy bucket).  All of these are free wheeling, have no sharp edges, and provide a nice amount of storage space to help make clean-up time a breeze.

The Shoe Box Play N'Store
Available exculsively at Target
Comes in three colors
The Shoe Box Play N'Store opens up to an interactive road to play on, and comes in three themes (city, castle, and farm). Kids can play on the mat for play time, and use the container space for packing and storing their toys when they are not in use.  Stackable and modular, these can be easily stored away in a closet, under a bed, etc.  If your child likes to take toys along when you're traveling, this is a great way to have them tote, play with, and then store those toys while on a trip.

ToyTainer Arcade Depot Grab N'Store
available at Target

The ToyTrainer Arcade Depot Grab N'Store is unique in that it has a cool gripper so your little ones can go around the room, grabbing their toys and dropping them into the arcade (where they can be stored). What child isn't going to want to run around with a gripper picking up their toys?? I love this idea, and think this would be a fun gift idea too.

You can see an overview of all of the ToyTainer items in their video above.
They've got a nice selection of really cool toys, all exclusively available for purchase at Target.

Do you have a favorite?

Learn more about ToyTainer toys by visiting Target online, or on your next visit to Target (they're in the toy aisle). You can also check out their website, and follow them on Facebook and/or Pinterest.

Double Infinity Copper Wind Spinner Giveaway

This is a contest I'd love to enter if I wasn't helping to promote it.  I think this is so pretty, and it reminds me that beautiful weather is coming soon!

Double Infinity Copper Wind Spinner
Giveaway

Along With

Proudly Brings You The

Double Infinity Copper Wind Spinner
Giveaway

1- Lucky Winner will receive one.

Holiday Contest and Sweeps was pleased to have the opportunity
to review a elegant product from Gift and Garden USA that has been
in existence since 644 BC. I wont keep you guessing, it is a beautiful
Double Infinity Copper Wind Spinner.  This unique spinner actually
is two spinners in one. The Double Infinity Copper Wind Spinner
features a small spinner nested within the larger triple helix. Rotating
in opposite directions, the contrasting helices create a relaxing and
mesmerizing visual effect. Made of copper, the double infinity wind
spinner will naturally age from bright copper to patina over time.

This masterfully crafted 16" wind spinner will bring you hours of joy
hanging in your garden or any place outdoors that you would like to
add a touch of pa jazz to this Spring. The effect that you get with a spinner
within a spinner will add a very cool effect as the wind spins them in opposite
directions.  The dual spinning feature will not only amaze you by watching it
as the wind creates magic, but will relax you after a hard day of work.

I was amazed at the small force of wind it takes to make the wind spinner
turn. We had a hook in our ceiling from a plant my wife had hung last spring,
that was directly over a heating duct. We hung the spinner from that hook and
was amazed at the beauty that small stream of air could create as it spun in
memorizing motions.

I would like to thank Gift and Garden USA for the opportunity to review this
unique spinner and to be able to provide one lucky winner of their very own.

Best of Luck Everyone!

This giveaway will end at 12:00 AM 3/21, just in time for the winds of March.
This giveaway is valid in the Continental United States only and entrants must
be 18+ years of age to enter.

Excuse the Mess, We're Camping (in the living room ;) )!

One still sleeping...
Dad was out of town last night, so we pulled mattresses off of beds,
& selected a menagerie of pillows and blankets fit for living room floor camping. ;)

Things feel off when my husband is out of the house.  Even if he's just sitting at the dining room table all night doing his homework, he's still here.  It's routine. We're used to it. We like him home.

Last night he had to leave town. That left us home alone, and that happens, next to never.  Since it felt a little 'off' to have dad gone, we decided to do something out of the ordinary too.

I'm an early-to-bed gal, but not everyone else in the house is...so, instead of sticking to the routine, we pulled out the mattresses, a menagerie of pillows and blankets, my daughter's big sleeping bag (for that camping feel, you understand, lol) and we camped out on the living room floor, watching movies and tee heeing/giggling until far past my bedtime. ;)

Such a silly, simple thing, and yet it was so awesome. I think every parent has done this at least once (or helped set up a space for the kids to do it).

Free entertainment, quality kid time, and mom encouraging the mess (see pic above)???  Yeah, those are good times. :)

Brand New Sun Products (for your laundry)!!

Disclosure: I received sample products to help facilitate the review. All opinions stated are genuine and my own.

It's my guess that at one point you have used a Sun Product and loved it.  Now they've come out with some new products, and I get to tell you about my experiences with them!! WOOT!

The first product is Snuggle Scent Boosters. There's no need to measure anything, these are pre-measured for you, and you simply toss one or two into the washing machine at the same time as you put in your detergent. They come in two scents: Lavender Joy and Blue Iris Bliss.

I tried the Lavender Joy and really liked the fragrance. It lasted quite awhile too, after the clothes were washed and dried.  The only down side for me with these was that a number of them were broken at the bottom of the package, which defeated the purpose of the nifty little pod. It could have been from shipping?

I loved the Snuggle Boosters, and not just because of the cute Snuggle Bear who is the mascot
(though he is really soft and cute)
Keep an eye out for this new product, it really does smell fantastic.

The second product pair I tried was the ALL Free Clear Liquid Detergent  and the ALL Free Clear Liquid Fabric Softener. The detergent was nice, just what you would expect from ALL...but hurrah, ALL has a liquid fabric softener! This brand name has been in households for 50 years now, that is enough to speak volumes. My gram used ALL, my mom used it, and now we sometimes use it too.

The new product is free of perfumes and clear of dyes.  Both worked as you would expect ALL to work. Both said they were 100 % fragrance and dye free, but I could detect a slight smell with both products while they were in the bottle. There was no fragrance from either when used in the clothes, and the clothes turned out clean and soft. I liked both of these too.  According to Sun Products, the ALL Free Clear products have been recommended by Dermatologists, Allergists, and Pediatricians as the #1 recommended detergent brand for people with sensitive skin.

The All Free Clear Dryer Sheets have absolutely no smell whatsoever. They work great, and they did reduce our static, especially with the children's pajamas that seem to turn into electric shock conductors this time of year. If you have those cozy warm fleece pj's for your kids, and you live in a cold place, you know exactly what I'm talking about.

The last new product I reviewed was the new ALL Stainlifters Mighty Pacs w/OXI. These are pods just like the Snuggle Boosters reviewed above, but they contain liquid instead of powder. These packages were all intact, they smelled good, and I am in love with anything that carries OXI in it, and goes into my washing machine. We have well water, so finding something that works great is not always an easy undertaking. These MightyPacs are designed to make white clothes whiter, all colors brigher, and to help remove tough stains and grime.

I loved these, and while it's hard to pick a favorite because they were all good, this is the one that got me most excited.  The product boasts being able to remove tough stains such as grass, blood, and grape juice. I've seen OXI do some pretty amazing things, so I believe it to be true.  We haven't had any stains to worry about of late (knock on wood), but once soccer season starts back up, you can be sure these will be getting overtime use.

If you see any of these in the stores, I urge you to give them a try.  Most are available now and the ones that haven't made it to the shelves yet should be there no later than March of this year. A big thank you ALL for introducing me to these new products, I truly enjoyed them all.

You can learn more about these great products by visiting www.all-laundry.com and/or visiting them on Facebook.

The Bavarian Inn Lodge: A Slice of Germany (but in Michigan!)

Disclosure: We received an overnight stay to help facilitate my review.  All opinions stated are genuine and my own.

Everyone had a four-day weekend in our house last week, and those don't happen often, so we meant to take advantage.  After a brief discussion, and a look at the weather, we thought a trip to Frankenmuth (a city in Michigan that replicates a town in Germany) would be fun. When you're going to Frankenmuth, and you have kids along, staying at the Bavarian Inn Lodge is always a great idea.

Just a small portion of the Bavarian Inn Lodge in Frankenmuth, MI.
The property is alongside 13 acres of beautiful riverfront land. The hotel itself takes up seven acres of it, and let me tell you, if you're going on a weekend, make reservations early, or you won't be spending the night. This very popular establishment had great parking spots when we arrived at one in the afternoon, but come dinner time, we had to park quite a long way away from our hotel entrance when we came back to play. This is our second time visiting the hotel, and it was b.u.s.y.  The beauty of it is that it is so huge, that while it was full, and busy, it was not a bit crowded.

Adults-Only Pool in a completely separate part of the hotel.

Family Pool with a waterfall on one side, and a separate whirlpool on the other.
Also had a moving sprayer to shoot people with water at the pool.

Whirlpool under the open-top gazebo at the far left, and family pool in the front.
The pool lights change colors every few seconds here.

This children's pool had water spray fountains going all around the sides
during hours of operation.  The stairs in the background lead to
the Bavarian Blast & Tower Twister slides.
I love this room because your tots and your teens both want to be in the same place. :)
The pools are just one of the great attractions of the Bavarian Inn Lodge.

The Bavarian Inn Lodge offers 100+ games in their game rooms,
plus paddle ball, air hockey, and pool.
You can see the German murals adorning the walls in the background.

I really cannot stress the size of the game rooms, there are two of them and they are HUGE!!
Pictured here is the Ninja Fruit Slice game...my favorite. :)
There are two BIG game rooms, with life-sized games...

Willey's Mini Golf
a Bavarian-themed mini-golf course (this was authentically decorated from beginning to end)...

One of the many play areas for small children.
and many thoughtfully put together areas for both smaller children,

One of the many open areas to congregate and visit.
& the older children/teens to gather.

There was also a place for the fitness buffs. This exercise room was nice & with the big weight machines too, it was perfect for everyone in the family (aged 16+).

Dance floor and Hula Hoop area (hula hoops provided).
Kiddie Karaoke took place on a stage to the right.
Several restaurants were situated around the hotel, including this open one by the game room where we ate breakfast. In this area there was a karaoke stage for kids (we indulged the night before), and a play area for kids to dance, hula hoop (provided), or just hang out and listen to the music.

One of the many large gathering spaces.
The Bavarian Inn Lodge is such a great location for social and work gatherings!
There were a lot of places that could be used for big gatherings. I've put up one photo of many rooms that were scattered throughout the expansive hotel.

Seriously awesome!

Headed upstairs to the Composure Room
A fantastic conference room area provided at the Bavarian Inn.

The upstairs of the Bavarian Lodge Inn has a most excellent conference area called the Composure Room. It had some seriously awesome displays going on.

The Bavarian Inn itself is grand, no doubt about it!! And it was marvelous. It was the small touches though, that will keep us going back. Telephones were scattered throughout the hotel so you could reach your room (we used that feature twice and it saved us having to go all the way back to where dad was lounging, to see if he wanted food or what have you brought back to the room with us when we went up), showers were placed by every pool so you didn't have to go back to your rooms after swimming, amenities were everywhere you looked, a shuttle was available to take you into Frankenmuth for shopping, dining, etc., and the people were nice.

That as my favorite thing, that the people working there were so nice!! I wake up far before anyone else in the family, even on mini-vacations, so I went strolling around. The people let me in their closed off areas to take pictures, the maintenance man stopped driving a cart full of items to let me pass him in the hall (though he didn't have to, there was plenty of room), the ticket counters in the game room were so patient, encouraging, and kind, and a young man heard us say a ticket counter was jammed, and he stopped walking to go over and fix it (we didn't ask him to, and clearly he was on his way to do something else at the time). Those kinds of things go over really big with us, and they seemed second-nature to the staff.

We had a standard-size, 2-bed room

We had a great view of the water park slides from our balcony.
That makes it festive for the kids to see that when they look outside.
The Cass River is behind it, and in the warmer weather we could have watched the boats going by.
I don't want to end my post without mentioning the rooms.  The rooms were clean, the linens were fresh and abundant, the bathroom had a separate area to dress, and the balcony would have been a pleasant treat in the summer because it overlooked the Cass River where the tour ferry and boats run in the warmer weather. There was also a refrigerator, which came in handy more than once.

It was def. a 5 out of 5 star stay for us.
