Last Weekend Before School

Big weekend for us here, with our youngest turning (7). He's starting to notice that his parties always consist of just family and kids who are like family (our friends' kids, not kids from school). He doesn't grouch about it, but he does mention  it... "Why don't my friends from school get to come?"  The timing of his big day, just before school starts, makes inviting school friends a challenge.

My daughter is a sophomore in high school this year. I don't have to ask how that happened (her growing up so fast) because I've already seen it with her brothers. One blink... or so they say, and that's true. She's not a big fan of school these days, but she is smart and very social too, so I think she'll be fine. :)

It rained and stormed all last night. I don't mind the rain, but I got a call at midnight to go pick hubby up from his last Fantasy Football draft (he always joins more than one). It was  pouring so hard I told him he'd have to wait. Finally at 1 am it lightened up enough for me to go out, but driving in bad weather always gets to me. And it reminded me of winter driving (you know, being extra alert and a little nervous at the wheel). They say it's going to be a harsh winter again this year. I hope 'they' are wrong because boy, I hate driving in the snow/ice/cold.

Speaking of winter (gah, why would I do that??!), it's about time to get snow tires on my car. I wish someone would come up with a year round tire...one great for winter cold and traction but not prone to wearing out in the warmer months. Wah, wah, I know. ;)

Last thing, and if there are any a/c experts out there, feel free to chip in advice: Hubby turned on the central air yesterday when he got home from work. He flipped it to auto like we always do and it wouldn't come on. -_-  The fan works fine, but not the auto setting. My big concern is the heat. That's how we run the central heat too, and with that winter I just mentioned too-fast approaching... well, you don't want to be without heat in the middle of winter in the state of Michigan. I also don't want a big a/c fix-it bill. *sigh* If I had to pick one thing to go, the central unit would not be it.

Last weekend here before school. Happy Sunday to ya', and happy long weekend. I fully intend to enjoy mine, and I hope you do too. :)

  1. School is already in session here. I remember when I was growing up it was always after Labor Day. As it should be.

Yikes on the air conditioner. Need to get that attended to as when it's cold you'll need that to work.

Our winter here isn't much. It gets cold, but that's about it. It's not snowed here since the mid 70s and then it didn't last but a hour or so.

Have a fabulous Labor Day weekend. ☺

  5. You are afraid of a hard and vicious winter to come, and I am shuddering at the thought of another long hot burning summer.
Some world wide weather moderation would be nice. Very nice.

  6. I'm enjoying the weekend off before school too... Valentina and I finished up our shopping and getting our hair done, we had a fun time ♡

I am NOT looking forward to another cold winter... that last one was horrible...

  7. The kids here went back to school last Monday. Boy did the summer fly by fast. I dread seeing winter come... but I know it will come whether I like it or not.
Hope your furnace/air is just having an off day. Did you try cleaning the filters?

  8. Hi Rosey, happy birthday to you son! I do hope that we don't have a winter like last year! Yikes! Have a wonderful night and day tomorrow. Good luck with school starting too.

  9. Starting school was always such a big deal. I never found the first day to be any fun at all, but you get used to it pretty fast.

  10. Let me state before I whine that I DO NOT want to trade with you - changing tires and such but it is going to be over a hundred degrees here tomorrow. Blah!

    Happy Birthday to little man!

  11. We started school last Wednesday and I have mixed feelings about it. I am sad that they went back early this year (this is the first time they have gone back before Labor Day), but hopefully they won't be going until the very end of June if there are a lot of snow days now.

  12. Blah to the AC going, but yeah at least you can suffer through that, the cold though, sure need heat for that. Better not be a long arse winter again, uggg, need to move to Florida. And the reason for the tires is $$$$$, why make a pair that does it all that you will only buy once until they wear out, when you can make 2 separate ones and make more $$$.

  13. Happy Birthday to your newly 7 year old son. I just have good all season tires on my car so I don't have to change them.

  14. Happy Birthday to the young man. 7 years old and that's an achievement.
Our weather must be as rough as yours and I haven't used snow tires in years. I used to get the studs and that helped on ice but all weather seems to do the job now. Back in the old school routine for you. :)

  15. Sorry about the heating. I hope you don't have a harsh winter because over on this side we had a very harsh summer & I'm not sure if the two are related. I can not do another summer of 115 for days on end, any more than you guys can have days in the sub zeros.

  16. I'm with you on the winter driving - it gets REALLY scary. I can't believe it's almost that time again. This year flew by, and I know I say that every year, but it's really true!

  17. I don't even know where the summer went. We go back on Wednesday and Thursday this week.

  18. Ugh.... Where did my summer go...? :(

  19. Happy birthday to your seven year-old. (Mine just turned six on August 11th.) School starts up on Tuesday for us too. We held our son back, so this will be his first big day of kindergarten. The tears are already building up. I hope you have a nice holiday and good luck w/ your air conditioner. (It sounds like we have a similar system...)

  20. Pre-school starts tomorrow and we are both ready. Brody can't wait to see his friends again and I can't wait to see what he will learn!

  21. Yes! I am wondering how winter will be this year as well...
Hope they have a great first day of school!!!

  22. This was our last weekend too. So many things to get ready for fall and winter.

  25. One more sleep until the craziness starts.
I'm trying to pace myself...banana bread in the oven.
Groceries and then something fun so we can enjoy this last day!
As for snow tires....lets finish summer first!

  28. My husband does the Fantasy Football crap too! You're a better wife than I am, if he called me at midnight to pick him up, he'd probably be walking home in the rain! Haha ;)

  29. Happy birthday to the little one. Birthdays are the best days. My niece and nephew have been in school for three weeks already, and it's a strange combination of relief and loss.

  34. Happy birthday to your son! All the schools around here have started now. Most of Elliott's friends have been back in school for a week and a half, but the ones on base didn't start until this past week.

  35. eeek. snow tires. Not for me - southern weather all the way!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Oh I can't wait for our Texas winter! Floor heaters and winter jackets and blankets all over the house! Your winter does not sound fun w snow tires.

    ReplyDelete
  37. School has been in session here in Florida for two weeks already, I'm still adjusting. Happy Birthday to your son, kids definitely grow fast sigh...

    ReplyDelete
  38. I don't even want to THINK about winter! I'm so not prepared for that.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Awful with no AC. School has started here.

    ReplyDelete
  40. School starts tomorrow here too. We had a beautiful afternoon! I spent time playing outside with my nephew and we had a blast.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Summer flew by didn't it? Our official new home school year starts next week.

    ReplyDelete
  42. My son turns 7 on the 5th!

I would get the a/c checked and quickly. We get cold winters in CT too and I'd rather not risk that.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Oh no, why did you have to bring up winter? I have been pretending like it isn't approaching. Last winter was our coldest in memory, and I'm worried that this year, I will have to put snow tires on my car too.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Hard to believe it's already back to school. My kiddos went back two weeks ago!!!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Wow it sounds like a lot went on this weekend. Sorry to hear about the AC, winter is right around the corner. My son is starting school tomorrow for the first time. It has been a busy weekend for me too since we took a trip to Maryland Friday - Sunday.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I hope your kids have a good back to school week! I hope your AC starts working correctly soon!

  47. Mariah's bday is at the beginning of June. Sometimes school is out for the summer before her bday, so it's hard to get kids to come. So, I guess we are kind of in the same boat as far as friend parties are concerned.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Can you believe this weather? It recently rained here also. Hopefully the rest of your weekend had good weather.

  56. Gosh, we've been at school for weeks now! Glad you got to enjoy Labor Day Weekend!

  57. My boys started school last week. All is going well. I hate driving during a rain storm late at night too. Don't blame you there. I ALSO hate the big bill that comes with getting four new tires. Lastly, I hope your A/C is okay. That would be a big expensive I imagine. But I have no advice, since we do not have central air. Good luck with back-to-school! :)

    ReplyDelete
  58. Happy birthday to your youngest!

I can't help you on the a/c question.

I will say, I am happy I don't have to add snow tires into my budget. They came in handy when I lived in the midwest though!

    ReplyDelete
  59. Happy Birthday to your youngest :) I hope back to school goes well for you all :) x

  60. We are actually inviting little man's school friends to his fourth birthday, the first time we've done that. (And I'm going to pretend you didn't mention winter.)

    ReplyDelete
  69. We had our first week last week. The kids are happy campers this week

  70. Happy Birthday to your son! Mine has his birthday on August and every year it's the same thing: all his friends are away on holiday and he is left to celebrate with "just" the family. His teacher usually celebrates all the July-August birthday kids at the beginning of the school year so that they get to have a proper classroom party with all their friends, which is really smart I think.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Happy birthday to your son! I hope he has a great school year.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I hate winter also! But they do have all season tires. That is what I use and they work just as well as winter tires. (PA girl here) We get extreme snow and Ice at times. Look up all season tires. They are great.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Happy birthday to your son! It's crazy how summer just flew by! Back to school and back to the grind now.

    ReplyDelete
  74. We're going in our third week of school here & our first birthday is coming up in a couple of weeks. I think I'm going to cave & at least invite one of my son's friends from school to his party. After all, they were in the same preschool class last year & now the same kindergarten class.

    ReplyDelete
  75. My kids started school over 2 weeks ago. I'm never ready for school to start but this year all of my children are in school. They do grow up soooo fast it is crazy

    ReplyDelete
  76. Yep summer is over kids everywhere are heading back to school so sad to say goodbye to no alarms.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Back to school gets so frustrating so glad that's over with haha

    ReplyDelete
  78. Wow you guys start school late. We started like August 18 in Florida :)

    ReplyDelete
  79. Happy Birthday to your youngest! Our first day was yesterday here and I am finding it hard to get into the swing of it. Back to School for the kdis means Back to work for me so it is bitter sweet for sure. Glad you had a nice week end before heading back.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Happy Birthday celebrations to your sweet little one.

I have been asked the questions too about kids coming to our party. I can't. I don't have the money. And kids being invited means money and goody bags. Party means different things here in America than in my home country.

The kids do grow up fast. My son says he prefers to be home with me and not in school. He doesn't whine about going or not going. He just make it a statement each time.

I do not like driving in rain. I feel I should pull over and wait.
I hope winter will just be normal this year. I cannot imagine driving on icy roads....I might have to sometime though. You never know.

I hope you get that a/c heat sorted out. I'm clueless on it. We just de-iced ours.

Happy ending of summer...well I did enjoy this summer a bit...I can't remember. I do remember that I enjoyed my kids though.

    ReplyDelete
  81. I hope the AC gets fixed since when you need heat you need to make sure it blows right!

    ReplyDelete
  82. My daughter just turned 7 on August 20th. We have the same issue with her birthday being right when school starts. Of course she started a new school so her party was family this year again. She doesn't really seem to mind though yet.
