School Pictures 2x a Year

I remember when school pictures were taken once a year, and that was it.  The schools here take one at the very beginning of the school year (we buy those), and then they take one towards the end of the year as well (we usually don't buy those).

The first set of pictures you pay for ahead of time, if you don't like the photo you can opt to re-do on re-take day.  The second set of pictures they send home, and they bill you. Of course you can exercise the option to return them and owe nothing.  Thing is... they make the second set have such cool effects, backgrounds, and layouts that you become tempted, even if you're not particularly fond of the picture!

Have you ever seen a half color/half B&W school picture?
For $42, we could have purchased (5) photo sheets, all of which had these great backgrounds and/or embellishments. Or, you could purchase any of the (5) you wanted. I love photos of my children (what parent doesn't), but this particular picture I wouldn't buy (since we already purchased pictures the first week of school). You can totally tell my son is saying, "CHEESE" and his smile looks fake and stiff (though he still looks cute to me, cuz he's my baby boy...I'm just sayin'). The kicker though, is they made it half color/half B&W, and so I couldn't resist the purchase of just one. They got me.

Have you ever seen a photo that was half & half like that one?

Not sure if it's good business sense for them to just print photo packages and send them home with a bill to pay.  It must be though because they keep doing it year after year.

  1. I han't seen this, but it really doesn't speak to me. school pictures are getting really expensive, and I think i would rather go for a great on with a single image on it, call me traditional?

    1. I like a nice traditional picture too. And I like when they mix it up too. :)

  2. I have never seen this before and they definitely don't do it around here. I think it's just a way to make money.

  4. We only had pictures once a year, same with my son. I do love the background though. That's a great picture. I'd buy it too.

    Have a fabulous weekend. :)

    1. I do wish it was two different pics (a different post in B&W) but I suppose it's lengthy enough as it is to get all of the kiddos' photos taken. ;)

  5. lol he looks like he just wants it over with. that is kinda pathetic they do it twice a year and send them home with a bill, I'd be telling those bleeps where they could bleepin stick the bleepin bill lol

  7. I guess since they know fewer will purchase the second set, they offer extras as incentives. I think the black and white one is cool.

  10. I agree that ones a year should be it, some places do this just for the money and not actually for the memory of the picture.

  11. Once a year is plenty when it comes to pictures. There are families out there that have trouble affording one set, let alone 2.

  12. We have them twice a year too. I think it is a little much. Amber N

  13. They do the same thing here, twice a year, and sending the sets home. I confess I don't buy them. The price just seems ridiculous to me.

  14. Wow. How things have changed. Our class photos had ALL of us lined up, and picking yourself out is tricky. And there was no cleverness with the background and/or colour either.

    1. We get the group photo too. That's the only one with a reasonable price on it, actually. :)

  15. Thankfully when my kids were little the school took pictures only once a year. The photos were nothing special and usually by the time the kids got in front of the camera, their clothes were rumpled or dirty or both, and their hair looked like somebody just gave them a noogie.
My daughter, Kathi, fantasized about being a model so 9 times out of 10 she would have some ridiculous expression on her face. I'm just grateful the photos were fairly inexpensive back then. :D

  16. I've never seen the halfsie either! Darn them for pulling out all the tricks to get you to buy them.

I always used to get irritated because they were just gonna throw away all the returned Spring photos after they were printed, so it bugged me from a "how dare you throw away pics of my child instead of giving them to me?" perspective and from a waste perspective.

It's all such a darn racket anymore, isn't it?

    1. I get irked that they're throwing away pictures of my kiddos too. Doesn't usually make me buy the second set though. This time, they def. got me. ;)

  17. I've never seen that either. I'm content with once a year. I prefer a really "clean" look of a photo I'm going to have to pay an arm and a leg for.

  19. I love the photo. It looks very professional. I think once a year is plenty for photos, especially since people have cameras ready available to them now days in their phones and other devices and can digitally document their children's lives fairly inexpensively.

  28. Ryan's school takes the pictures 2x per year. The company is Lifetouch. They take the shot and send home his picture with a huge "Copyright Protected - DO NOT COPY" They of course remove the preview when you buy them. With the digital age....I don't spend much time organizing and displaying pictures....I guess you could say my blog is my photo album. :)

  31. I refuse to buy the school pics, no matter how cute they are. The first 2 years Mariah was in school they screwed up our order, which was placed in October. I was fighting for my pictures all the way through June. 2 years in a row! I much prefer candid pics of my family anyway, but boy, those pics you received of your son are really cute! I would have been really tempted to fork over the cash for those and prepare for a fight lol.

  35. I don't buy the Spring pictures either. My daughter talked my mom into getting one sheet of her pictures last year, but I'm not going to get them after buying pics, and yearbooks, in the fall. I'll admit it has been VERY tempting though! :-)

  39. Our school has Fall and Spring pictures as well. I always complain about how overpriced they are but still end up buying some :) I just buy a small package so I can give one to each grandparent and keep one for us. I've never heard of them billing you tough, we have to pay ahead of time for both and yep, the Spring ones always have cool background to sucker you into buying them!

  40. Love that school picture. Christopher's school does the same thing. I'm never really want to buy them because it always falls when he needs a haircut. They should put picture day on the school calendar. This school year I was suckered into the second set. No half black & white, but a 3 pic collage of his poses and the year on it. However the deal was, they made it sweet that it didn't seem worth it to buy that one photo because you got it "FREE" if you bought the whole package. As you know my husband and I do photography. I certainly can't understand how they came afford to do that. I have definitely sent whole packets back. And I've also been on the receiving end of that "note" that I had not paid nor sent the pictures back. I'd hate to be the admin behind chasing down pictures or payment.

    1. We could have gotten 'free' photo bookmarks if we'd have gotten the whole set, which my son determined he wanted oh so bad. We didn't get the whole set so they went back. I don't think he's even thought of them once since then. ;)

  41. We have the school photos dilemma here too. Thing is, we can't afford them. I've bought some before at the lowest price, but I'd prefer if they take class photos, so you remember who you were in class with and your teacher etc.

That is indeed a cool photo with the color mixed black and white!!! Usually it's either or either. And it's true, it's hardest not to purchase the photos, but I realize I take way more photos of them and while I can't jazz it up cool. They are still memories.

I think if they send the photos home, there is a good chance the parent will have other people there looking at the photos and oohing, aahing and so they'll purchase,
Or they'll forget to send it back and then get billed.
Or the child will beg to have one.... :)

Maybe it's good business after all eh.

Your son is handsome, cheese or no cheese :)
