That Will Be $5,000 for the Popcorn Please

We wanted to go see Free Birds at the movies. I thought it was cool that there was a Thanksgiving kids' movie playing.  There are two theaters very close together, and we usually go to the busier one.  That day movie times didn't coordinate well for us and we went to the near empty theater instead.

Both theaters are nice, clean, and run current movies. The big difference for us...that child-sized bowl of popcorn my son has in his hand was $8.50.  The other theater gives them a whole kid-pk. for $3.50 (popcorn, drink & gummies).  That snack was more than his movie ticket, lol.

Therein lies one benefit of being busy...you can charge far less and still make a profit...and the cheaper prices keep drawing people in.  I wonder if that's why most people go to the busier theater. I know it's why we will in the future.  When four of us are going, big price jumps like that can make a big difference.

Have you seen Free Birds?  It was cute, my son kept laughing out loud. That was better than the movie. :)

I am going to admit here and now that I lied this past summer about Emma's age to get her into movies for free, because $9.25 for a kids ticket was so not happening during a matinee. Seriously, I am with you on the prices and I would go wherever it was cheapest at this point, too. We do want to see the new movie Frozen when it comes out and seriously looking forward to it now!! :)

We are going to see it next weekend when we are up in NH. The kids are dying to see it, but we wanted to save it for that weekend. And $8.50 for popcorn is OUTRAGEOUS!!!!

Wow 8.50... forget the popcorn :-(

I would go to the cheaper, busier place too...

I'm excited about Frozen too. It looks awesome on the previews.

mail4rosey said...

And you're in a big city saying that, so I feel better now. :)

mail4rosey said...

Seriously, Launna, I laughed when he gave me the total.

This is why I don't go to the movies all that much. Every once in a while we'll make the splurge but the prices are ridiculous and it makes it hard to enjoy something when you've dropped the money for a week's groceries at the theatre. The next movie I'll be seeing at the theater is Catching Fire!

Yikes! I haven't been to a theater in years. One of these days, I need to take the kids. I'll bring $100. ;)

mail4rosey said...

Ah, I just looked it up to see what it was... I haven't watched any of those because I don't want to cry, lol. I bet they're good though.

mail4rosey said...

That's a nice safe amount to bring, hahahhaa. I hope it's enough!! Kidding. :) Sort of... ;)

Well that is one thing great about being a senior citizen - cheaper movie tickets - that looked cute.

mail4rosey said...

His tickets are cheaper than ours too. Just not his popcorn. ;)

Your Disco and his bud picture was cute today. :)

Goes to show you why the one theater is empty and the other one isn't. Highway robbery doesn't sit well with most people.

Don't you love it when your kids show their emotion by laughing at silly things. Very cute picture.

mail4rosey said...

I do love when they laugh at things like the movies. Makes me happy. :)

The movies are crazy expensive now. With our family of five we can't afford it.

It is crazy how expensive going to the theater is. I often do what you are not supposed to do. I take cloth sandwich bags with veggies and fruit. Often times we go buy a movie because it's cheaper to do that. We get to see it more than once to.

This movie looks too cute but the prices to go these days are insane! We just found a theater that offers childcare during your move for $6!!!!! Can you believe that! Cheaper than a babysitter and they provide you with popcorn and fun activities. Hubby and I are totally taking advantage of that.

We try and catch the early shows because the cost does creep up there.

mail4rosey said...

We buy sometimes too, especially if it's a show we already know we like (the University Monsters Inc is on my list).

mail4rosey said...

No way!! I've never heard of such a thing, that is cool for parents!

Glad I don't eat that stuff, that would put people in the poor house, pfft to buying there

I am appalled at the price of theater consessions. But I suppose it's either that or raise the price of the ticket. I don't eat theater food anymore but I remember when I could eat a tub of popcorn by myself. LOL
Glad everyone enjoyed the movie.

Ok, I really want to see this movie! I think I might be able to get my hubby to go with me. He actually likes animated movies! And I love anything with talking animals, especially birds :)

We are going to see that one tomorrow! I can't wait! We usually go to the cheaper theater too. For under $30 we can all get in to the movies and all have popcorn and drinks. That's a 3D showing too! I sometimes feel really robbed when we go to other theaters and spend more on concessions than on the tickets!

Julie Maloney said...

I haven't seen that yet but I'm sure I will. My father firmly believe you need to sneak all candy into the theater.

Sandee said...

Going to the movies can be expensive indeed. We used to bring our own candy and popcorn. It was too expensive to do anything else and my son wanted to see what he wanted to see. Worked for us.

Have a fabulous day. ☺

If the four of us go to the movies, it costs $50 - my kids have to pay adult prices now. It's ridiculous, and probably why we haven't seen a movie in the theaters in ages. And hearing your child laugh out loud is the best sound ever!

We haven't been to the movies with my son because we know that he won't sit through it but also because they are so darn expensive. I always brought my big movie purse with popcorn and soda from home so I know that I wouldn't be able to pay $8.50 for a popcorn. UGH! That movie looks adorable so I guess we need to add it to the list that we need to get when it comes out.

I just looked at the video (thanks for posting!). This movie looks great, thanks for letting me know about it! Movies these days are pricey - I like to find deals any way that I can. Your little guy is looking so big!!!

Oh we haven't been to the movies in ages. I actually can't remember what was the last movie that we went to see. It's ridiculously pricy and our little ones would not see or let us see the entire movie, so what's the point.

Justin Knight said...

We just saw "Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2" and had so much fun. We were just saying we wish there was another kid movie out and now I know there is! Thanks for letting us all know! :)

I laughed at the title of this post! The prices at the movies are outrageous. I don't know what family can afford family entertainment anymore. Going to a baseball game is insane. It makes me sad! On a happier note...will you ever get sick of me telling you how cute your son is? Love the smile and the glasses. I think I might give the kid $5K for popcorn, if he flashed those pearly whites at me. ;)

Movie snacks have always been quite pricey around here. No wonder people used to sneak in their own food. I don't know if they still do that or not. Haven't been to the show in quite some time.

I haven't seen that movie, but we have a theatre that has an econo hour. $4 a ticket for current run movies and $1 for a small popcorn and Coke. Plus, we get funny commentary from the audience, like, "Don't go in dare. He gotta knife. He gonna kill you!" Such a fun theatre.

Going to theater is definitely a treat. It is expensive though. Even though hubby and I get the senior discount by the time we are done, it is still over $30. I do love the popcorn though. The movie looks good!!

Hannah Chase said...

The movie theatre is definitely overpriced, I think for the snacks and drinks more than the tickets, but it is still a lot of fun. I also love that there's a Thanksgiving animated movie for kids, it looks so cute! I haven't had the chance to see it yet.

Now I understand why people sneak food in.

I haven't yet seen this movie, but glad you and your son enjoyed it.

We'll see it as soon as it lands in our library :)

Kristi Maloney said...

You sold me! I think I'll surprise the kids (all three of them including hubs) with the announcement that we will go to see this movie tomorrow, thanks to Rosey's son's stamp of approval. ;). Prices for snacks are outrageous! But I must have my movie theater popcorn....

Those high prices drive me crazy too. We have not seen Free Birds yet, but I'm sure we would all enjoy it!

we go broke trying to go see a movie...
i know what you mean... it was like $40 for us at the concessions once (for just the 3 of us... marc and i were sharing...)

Kristie said...

Wow! I can't believe the difference in prices between the 2 theaters! We have 2 that are close together as well, but they're pretty comparable...they also usually play different movies, so you can't see the same thing in both.
