Friday the 13th

There's a lot of hoopla going on because today is Friday the 13th.

I'm not sure why it's a day riddled with superstition. Is it because of the movie? Or was the movie because of it? I suspect the latter (As an aside, I've never seen the movie, nor do I intend to because I'm entirely a huge chicken).

The day doesn't freak me out. Does anyone know the origin?

Does the day make you wary?

I for one, LIKE black cats! :)

I was going to say I'm not superstitious, but I guess that's not entirely true. I don't like three 6's together.  I'm sure there's something else that gets to me, but I can't think of a one.  I used to hold my breath when I passed a graveyard, but I've long since outgrown that one. ;)

How about you? Are there any superstitions that get you going?

  1. My stepmom used to hate the 6's too. She worked at KFC and when someone's total was $6.66 she would always add a penny to their order total lol.

    3. I can firmly see why you and Pat are bloggy friends, he's a brat too. ;)

It's okay, I like brats, I have a house full of 'em. They do NOT get it from me. :)

  2. I always thought it was because of the movie, but maybe it's vice versa! I'm not too superstitious, but seeing three 6's together does make me feel unsettled as well. So maybe I am a little more superstitious than I think!

Hope you have a great weekend, Rosey! :)

  3. Its a bunch of bull, some guy who thought friday the 13th was unlucky, died on friday the 13th, so along came the rumor. Or that is one theory. Another I think is some people got burned or slaughtered or something like that on friday the 13th long ago. But Tuesday the 13th is considered unlucky elsewhere and friday the 17th elsewhere too. All a bunch of nonsense. A day like any other, sames chances of bad crap happening as any other day. I'll walk under a ladder, smash a mirror, stay on the 13th floor and even look at the 666 and think so what?

    1. It has nothing to do with the movies also

    2. Or the same chances of good stuff happening today as any other day. ;)

Interesting theories. Reading what you wrote reminded me of the 1999 hoopla years ago (yeah, I know, showing my age again). I never buy into the 'world will end on this year' theories either. There was one more recent (not long ago at all) that the kids mentioned, but I can't remember what it was. I do know the world didn't end that day though... ;)

  4. Rosey ~ You are thinking of the end of the Mayan Calendar. Because the Mayan Calendar ended on Dec. 21, 2012, that meant the world would end. You can read more about it here if you like: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_phenomenon. As for Friday the 13... I usually forget about it until people remind me, so I guess I am not all that superstitious about it. Now, I do believe that when we are in a full moon people tend to act "whackier" than they normally would. Ha!

    1. That's it, it was the Mayan Calendar!

My mom always said, 'It must be a full moon,' when people were acting crazy. ;)

    1. I'm still racking my brain, I'm sure there's something I forgot, but I'm getting nada.

My little one won't step on a crack if he's thinking about the little rhyme, "Step on a crack, break your mama's back." I should act like I'm hurt the next time he steps on a crack, just to amuse myself. He 'gets' 'my off-humor so I'm pretty sure he'd laugh too. ;)

  8. I hate three 6's together too lol - and for some reason they seem to show up quite often in my world!!!
When those movies first came out I went to the first one - pregnant with my first - and it was 3 d -
I put the glasses on - and promptly closed my eyes through the entire movie and everyone thought I watched it LMHO!!!
    Happy 13th Rosey!!!

  11. I had black cats for so long as a kid, and what with 2013 being a pretty great year for me, overall, my superstitions are pretty much nonexistent as far as the generics! Now, spilling salt, on the other hand--a pinch always goes over the shoulder...and the one everyone gives me a weird look for is from my dear, dear friend (who is Italian, and loaded with little old wives' tales and superstitions), who always warned that if I put my handbag on the kitchen table, I'd wind up married to a drunk. (I changed THAT behavior real quick, just in case!! lol)

  16. Friday the 13th has always been one of my favorite days. Early this morning we left our marina and traveled two hours to our weekend destination. We have some boating buddies that refuse to leave for their bay cruise until tomorrow. Doesn't bother us one bit and we got here without incident and are tied up to the dock.

    Have a fabulous day. :)

  18. The date doesn't bother me either. I saw the movies when I was little. I was up every night for over a week, and finally my mom told me to go sleep with my brother, since he was the one that allowed me to watch them (he's 8.5 years older than me, and was watching us while my mom was gone or something). I don't think he let me watch scary movies on his watch again. Haha.

  26. I'm not superstitious about Friday the 13th or 666. Actually, these are auspicious numbers according to the Chinese. However, The Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean and Japanese are superstitious about the number four because it is a homonym for "death" in their languages.

  30. I used to trip on my [mostly] black cat after the sun went down. I really miss him. Nothing wrong with black cats.

From my maternal grandmother I've learned not to come into the house through one door and go out another. Because she lived next door to us, I had plenty of reminders on that as I was growing up. One time I went out the back after having come in the front. I had to go back in the house and exit through the front door.

  37. I guess the superstitions vary from region to region. In India, some people will not proceed further if a cat crosses their path. A cawing crow gives an intimation of soon to arrive guests.

  43. I think it had something to do with some war and the knights of templar, why the 13th is superstitious, but I can't remember the whole story.

I don't care of the triple 6s either.

I try not to be superstitious, but sometimes you do think twice about something right.
And from where I'm from, the old wives tales abound!

    ReplyDelete
  44. I'm not superstitious, but I'll admit I found it odd that Friday the 13th was the one year anniversary of the kids' and my first accident...of course there were jokes that maybe I shouldn't drive that day after we'd been in the 2nd accident only 5 days prior. ;-)
