My Child's Social Calendar is Full

It's hysterical to me, and slightly pitiful too, that my 5-yr. old son's social calendar is much busier than his mother's. ;)

Back-to-School Bash

Last week alone I took him to a birthday party, a going-away party, and a back-to-school bash. The teacher he had last year created this awesome board on Shutterfly where parents could add pictures they'd taken throughout the year and everyone could see/order them (love that idea). The board, however, also allows messages and everyone gets an e-mail when one goes up. That meant the kids could stay in touch over the summer. It's been fun, and I really, really like the concept.

There is a child inside of that ball. :)

We've been to a handful of events this summer, and a good number of the kids in the class showed up to each of them. It's fun for them to have others their age to play with, and it's exciting to see your schoolmates over the break.

One mom had her son's birthday party at the local park and I thought that was brilliant. Dad cooked burgers and hotdogs on the grill, coolers of juice boxes and water were brought, and a few toys were brought along for novelty (like the big ball above). The playground provided the rest of the entertainment for the kids. And the cool, sheltered pavilion was a haven for the parents who wanted to be able to socialize, see their kids at all times, and stay out of the heat.

Going away party

The going-away party we went to a couple of days ago was bittersweet. The little girl on the far left is someone my son is sad to see moving. She's just a real sweetheart, but moving's sometimes a part of life, and her dad got a great job, so...we're just happy for her family, but she'll be missed. That card in my son's right hand is something he made for her. I love how the little ones put so much effort into appreciating one another. :)

In any case, summer's closing down now and school will be back in session before we know it. Then the kids' calendars REALLY get busy. But that's okay, I don't mind a bit. :)

I know Rosey, my girls had two birthday parties for friends in one day this week and the end of soccer. Their social calendars are definitely way busier then mine, too!!

haha he has more of a social life than me to. Don't see any kid in the ball, but I'll take your word for it

His social world is yours too, so you do have a social life.

We only had soccer at the beginning of summer. I wish we'd have had it longer like you guys did!

It's all fun for me. I like hanging w/the little dude. :) We're about to get busy though...the kids, and me and hubs. I'm bracing for it. ;)

He's in there, I tell ya!! :)

That toy was a huge hit at the party! It was so popular I was worried it was going to get popped (but it didn't).

Best company around. :)

Thanks, Carol. He's a sweetheart, and summer has been absolutely fantastic!

That's too bad his friend is moving. Looks like he's had a fun summer, though.

I've seen those balls, so cool. Moving is always hard looks like a wonderful summer!

mail4rosey said...

I love summer. :)

mail4rosey said...

Gah, it is hard work to move. They're only going a couple of hours North, so hopefully they've got lots of help. :)

That's sad that little girl is moving. My son's best friend moved. They talk about coming back. I sure hope they do.

How sad that sweet little friend is moving but they can still stay in contact ...

Not unusual now it seems! When I was little, my day consisted of being bossy and whiny. Now they are like little CEO's with full schedules!! lol

I'm glad that my daughter's BFFs are either in the neighborhood or at church. And I'm really glad that my boys can drive. Yes, I just said that! The era of taxi-mom is quickly coming to a close!

Sandee said...

It's a shame that that little sweetheart is moving, but that is indeed what happens. It's just part of life. Hopefully they will communicate still. Much easier now than it was in our day.

Have a fabulous day. :)

that is an awesome concept...so glad he had a busy summer.

poor girl, it's tough to start over in a new place. glad she has friends who will still keep in touch

My grandboy is way more social and has more things going on than I do also.
It's great that the kids were able to keep in touch like that, that's a great idea and an awesome effort on the teachers part.

Melisa Anderson said...

We're lucky in that we're in a town where we really don't know anyone. Our social calender is pretty empty :) But we have a ton of family stuff going on this month and it's all 3.5 hours away. That makes for a lot of time in the car.

Robin said...

It's like that for all kids. I think that parents exist just to get their kids from one event to the next. Ha!

Christy Maurer said...

Love those pictures! It is so hard for kids when their friends move! My kids social calendars are much fuller than mine too lol.

Theresa said...

Isn't that shift amazing when you have kids and your schedule is no longer your own? My days are so full of the kids activities and I love it!

Sorry your son is losing a friend! It seems ever year Allison loses one of hers. Maybe you could start a Shutterfly page for your son and the little girl to keep in contact?

JDaniel4's Mom said...

It looks like she had a wonderful summer! What fun things she got to do!

mail4rosey said...

Technology makes it a lot easier to coordinate that's for sure. :)

mail4rosey said...

I like that they can keep in touch too. I wish all of the teachers did it. :)

Happy Monday to you too, Judy!

mail4rosey said...

I remember when parents used to go places and the kids would play. Now kids go places and the parents chat there, lol.

mail4rosey said...

He's a social bug too, he loves to go go go. I did too when I was younger. ;)

mail4rosey said...

Aww, I remember when you wrote about your son's friend moving. :( My son was asking her mom if the daughter could stay behind when they moved, hahahahaha. That was a big 'no' from mom, lol.

mail4rosey said...

Technology's a cool thing for communication. :)

mail4rosey said...

I have to check my calendar to make sure the kids' activities aren't penciled in on days I've got to do something. ;) Not even kidding. :)

mail4rosey said...

I was glad when my 2nd oldest could drive because he had me going all over the place before he got his license. All good stuff too, so I couldn't really complain. Still... it was nice when some of that driving burden shifted to him. :)

mail4rosey said...

She is a little sweetheart. They had SUCH a nice class last year!

mail4rosey said...

I think it's easier in the lower grades, and she'll be going into 1st Grade. Kids seem more willing to accept others still at that age (a great quality I wish we all kept).

mail4rosey said...

Blaming the grandbaby...tsk. ;)

mail4rosey said...

I loved that sharing idea, and I love that the parents are participating!!

mail4rosey said...

My husband's family is about an hour north and that seems long sometimes! 3.5 hours, def. a hike. ;)

Our Neck of the Woods said...

That is too funny! It seems like parents are so busy these days. It's sad that his cute little friend is moving but I guess that happens when Dad gets a good job somewhere else!

mail4rosey said...

We're pretty good about having them only 'be' in one thing at a time. With the older two boys, there was a lot of overlap in their schedules, and I remember that posing a challenge a time or thirty. ;)

mail4rosey said...

Good thing we have our kids to keep us out and about socializing, yes? lolol

mail4rosey said...

They're already gone, but that would have been a great idea! Who even knew Shutterfly could be used as a communication tool, lol.

He'll be totally fine, they bounce back from that stuff fast when they're little. :)

I love the busy schedule too, Theresa.

mail4rosey said...

She's going to be missed, for sure. My son asked if she could stay behind when her parents moved, lol.

mail4rosey said...

Can't begrudge dad a good job, that's for sure.

She's sweet, she'll get lots of new friends fast, I'm sure of it. :)

Kristi Maloney said...

The party at the playground sounds ideal. We have a similar playground and that's all the kids need really need to have fun! My kids start soccer today, so let the carpooling and busy schedules begin! :)

Susan Flett Swiderski said...

Juggling kids' activities while trying to eke out a tiny bit of a social life of your own can be quite a challenge. But they'll be grown up before you know it.

That's a lovely party! I think their social lives are more active than our because we gave most of ours up for them to have one. That ball looks like a lot of fun! How sad his friend is moving but sweet to make her a card.

What can you say... he is a sought after kinda boy. I agree with Mel, you give up everything for your kids so they can enjoy their life to the fullest.

Awe, your little man is too cute. And thanks for giving me a peek into my future ~ before I know it, Sofia's calendar is going to be fuller than mine, it almost already is and she's barely 2! I'm excited to see her do and try new things though, it will be fun.

Colette S said...

Oooh just wait until he is in the teens! But then you have a daughter too that's still at home, so you know it.

But isn't it true that they usually have a busier social calendar than we do :)

I absolutely want one of those balls! Is it a gigaball? I can't remember the name but I've always wanted one!

And I do love the photo idea for the children. Great minds eh.

Enjoy the fun days woman!
You know, you are so blessed. You get to enjoy a little one coming up and also grandchild. What a circle. You are blessed Rosey.

That back-to-school bash and the birthday party sound so much fun to me. Wow, it's great that the teacher created that Shutterfly board, and it's amazing how young kids can handle it. I'm sorry your son's friend had to move, but yeh, it's part of life.

Ohhhhh sweetie... I have 2 VERY social girls in cheer... One of my friends asked when I'd be available for dinner. I looked down at my handy dandy Cozi calendar and responded.... As of this specific moment...November 10th...

mail4rosey said...

Yep, you've got two soon, you're going to be busy for the rest of your life! :)

It's a good busy though. ;)

mail4rosey said...

I'm not sure if it's called a GigaBall or not, but it fits more than one child and the kids love it (durable thing too, it didn't pop and I thought for sure it was going to).

Thank you for your sweet words. :)

mail4rosey said...

I knew you started earlier than us! We go back next week. :)

mail4rosey said...

I like the whole class invites, actually. It makes for a fun party. We might do that this year...at the park, lol.

I think one of the busiest Saturday's we ever had was a basketball game at 8:30, a noon pool party and then another party at 5:00 that was for the adults just as much as the kids. But just those three things took all day and I was whipped and of course in between I scrambled to get gifts. I could kick my butt every time I wait until the last minute. That shelter would have been nice at the pool party but I was sitting in the sun. Woooooo.

mail4rosey said...

I get wiped out a lot quicker if the functions are outside. I love the sun and being out in it, but it takes its energy toll, for sure (if it's hot). ;)

Thanks for stopping by to visit!
