This Place is Like a Circus!

The circus is in town, but it's going to be in a fairly small, and solidly confined building, which makes me nervous. Is that dumb?  I know Noelle over at Jumpin Beans has been and loved it. In fact, her pictures of the event were awesome.

I've never been to a circus, but I know they have very large animals, and that even though I am a huge animal lover, sometimes things go wrong when they are involved.  If something were to go wrong in that building it could end up very not pretty.  Call me a worrywart, that's fine. Every once in a blue moon that statement is true.

The elementary school is touting it though, and the youngest tells us every single day that he wants to go. Hubby has no reservations at all, so I'm guessing it's going to be on an agenda soon.  I'm not really a lot nervous, just in-the-back-of-my-mind nervous., if that makes sense.

Have you been?

I've been to the circus many times. Growing up, my parents always took us to Ringling Brothers in Boston, but I haven't taken my kids to that one yet. Just the small ones that come around.

We went to the circus last week. In fact I wrote a blog post about it that I might post today.

I'm not a big fan of the circus at all. It just seems like too many things could go wrong. Elliott wanted to go, though (his school was just like your son's), and so did Daddy. I would have sent them by themselves if I could have, but unfortunately my husband had to work that night, so I had to go to bring Elliott home so Carl could make it to work on time.

We are big animal fans here, too, but that's what our zoo passes are for. ;)

Erm, good luck?

We live across the street from where they used to set up the circus. I loved it because I could see all the animals outside. It did get kind of noisy at ten at night when the circus was over and all the circus people would be sitting outside their trailers partying. You should go and enjoy it. I wouldn't worry about it if I were you.

Never been to one, can't say I'd be nervous about it. But you never know, an elephant could co on a rampage and stomp every body to bits lol

mail4rosey said...

Reassurance in the form of bloggers who have been, lol :)

mail4rosey said...

My son is just laughing at the online pictures so I'm sure he will have a great time in person.

mail4rosey said...

This is not comforting my worries, Jacqueline... ;)

mail4rosey said...

I probably won't worry about it, I sound like a silly worrier, and I'm not, but the thoughts have crossed my mind enough to post it, lol.

mail4rosey said...

Mischevious, there's that word again, lol.

Hopefully I won't think a thing about it once we're there. Still, I'm thinking the cheap seats in the back might be preferable to front liners, hehehe

I think about those things too. The first Shamu show I saw at Sea World, the whale grabbed the trainer in his mouth, and took her down. We all thought it was part of the show, but when she got up, she really scrambled away, and got out of the water quickly. It was pretty shocking. Animals will do what they want to do, and I don't think any trainer has full control at any time. Sorry to make it worse for you!;)

When I was little the Shriner's put on a circus in our town every year or every other. We went all the time. It is fun to watch but a little sad all the same. The workers look tired and "hardened" if you know what I mean, and the animals spiritless. If you are afraid of clowns, a circus might not be the best place to go, but since I went as a kid, and the clowns did funny stuff, they have never bothered me.

Otherwise, I never felt threatened in any way by the animals. They have a lot to lose if things get out of hand so they make sure the viewers are kept safe.

Other than the cat circus I went to recently, I haven't been to the real circus since I was a kid myself.

Sandee said...

You'll be fine. Safety is their first concern. You'll see that when you go.

Have a terrific day and weekend. ☺

Pat Hatt said...

Yeah but in the back when they shoot people out of cannons the cannon could misfire and they could come right at you. The trampeze people could fly the wrong way and land on you, fire jugglers could set the whole place on fire, in a panic you could get crushed. A lion could get loose and look for dinner. A gorilla may give you fleas. You just never know hahaha Or you could just get stuck beside a guy who farts the whole time.

mail4rosey said...

I forgot about the cannons! LOL
Authors are always so inventive. -_-

And to think I encourage imagination in this house... ;)

A Creative Harbor said...

I enjoyed it as a child ~ have to go at least once ~ Enjoy the weekend ~ ^_^

thanks for visiting ~ love to 'see you'

mail4rosey said...

That would have scared me. I think there are plenty of cases of animals doing what they want despite wonderful training. And some of them at the circus are pretty big or have the potential to be ferocious, lol.

I saw a news headline today w/a toddler and a baby cub growing up playing/socializing together and I was alarmed. You just never know.

Rea T said...

been to a circus before with my son rosey and it was fun, the venue was big though ♥

i suggest if you are kind of worried with the venue, whether being too confined or too small based on your judgement, then you might want to consider being seated close to an exit and if(when) something happens, you have a fast access to it...

huggies♥

mail4rosey said...

Aww, my mother-in-law won't go to anything that cages or displays the animals because she thinks it's sad. We do, but I do still think of it from time to time.

I imagine traveling all the time could take its toll on the workers, for sure.

mail4rosey said...

The cat circus was cool. :)

mail4rosey said...

Thanks, Sandee!

mail4rosey said...

I think it's a thing you should see too...I have four kids and haven't gone yet, we're overdue.

Always happy to see you too. :)

mail4rosey said...

I really did consider that and will probably buy the cheap tickets for just that reason, lol. :)

Happy weekend, Rea!

Colette S said...

I understand your concern.
I've been to the circus once. It wasn't something that hit me like wow, but I think the kids enjoyed it.
Maybe I'd have felt that 'thing' if I had seen one as a child.

We have that gut caution for a reason. It will be you and the hubs choice.

stevebethere said...

I'm sure you will love it, I haven't been to a circus since i was a kid which was only 2 years ago Yep I was lying about the 2 years

Have a lovely time :-)

mail4rosey said...

The clowns make my son laugh online. :) I am betting 99.9% we go, I'm just sitting us in the back. ;)

I think old age is doing me in, I haven't been a nervous nelly about much of anything until very recently, and now here and there I see it. Ah, I don't care, just noting I see it. :)

mail4rosey said...

What a coincidence, I was just a kid a couple of years ago too. ;)

Thanks for the visit, I'm sure it'll end up fun. :)

Optimistic Existentialist said...

I haven't been to the circus in AGES. But I still remember the awesome snowcones :)

Bev said...

I have been to the circus... I know what you mean... I am always sitting on the edge of my seat...waiting for something bad to happen... I have a bigger problem with the acrobats falling though than worrying about the animals..

mail4rosey said...

LOL, my daughter always goes straight for the snowcones at the fair. ;)

mail4rosey said...

I'm guessing their practice sessions include a lot if ice. I always think they're amazing (from TV, movies, and Cirque, which I have seen). :)

Suzan Sweatman said...

I can't say that I've ever been nervous at a circus - but I'm nervous of everything else so I get what you mean lol
We used to go every year to the Shriners Circus as a youngster - always indoors - always anticipated - your son will love it!!!

I have been...once in Phoneix, AZ when I was visiting a friend. I liked it, actually. :) Though these days, I always wonder about how they really treat their animals since I'm such an animal lover and I've heard some not-so-good stories about animal practices in circuses in general. Alas, leave it to me to worry about such things, lol.

mail4rosey said...

I bet he will, he's been perusing the websites to check out pictures and always ends up laughing. :)

mail4rosey said...

It crosses my mind too, Cyndi. It's not just you. :)
If everyone treated animals kindly there wouldn't be a second thought about it, but unfortunately, that is not always the case.

Jen said...

I haven't been to a circus since I was little but I always had fun. :)

Marie Moody said...

Oh my, you are a worry wort aren't you? Put your worries behind you & have a great time. I went to the circus when I was a little girl and it's a memory I'm so happy I have. What a marvel it was. Everything happens for a reason good or bad & there's nothing you can do to change it. I predict you'll have a fabulous time if you just relax and let the fun and wonderful memories begin. happy Mother's Day!

Aleksandra Nearing said...

Only as a child when I was maybe 6 back in Poland...and I remember being upset my treat fell down under the bleachers. I have been to Cirque du Soliel which obviously isn't the real circus but my favorite performing show!!

mail4rosey said...

They do look fun. :)

mail4rosey said...

Most excellent points, Marie. It's funny that I'm getting hedgy in my old age, I've never been such a thing in my life!

mail4rosey said...

We saw our first Cirque during the holidays. It was nice. That's funny you remember the treat falling. Funny what sticks, isn't it? :)

Theresa said...

We haven't been to a circus is years. Probably when my teenager was in Kindergarten. While it certainly is entertaining, I always leave feeling really bad for the animals.

Lena said...

Everything will be fine :) I went to a circus many times when I was a kid. But I never liked that the animals are tortured and forced there. I liked to watch people more.

Kristie said...

We took the kids to the circus last summer. (It was a small circus.) There was truly nothing to worry about with the animals...they tend to be quite careful :-)

JDaniel4's Mom said...

We haven't been yet. I have promised JDaniel we will do next year.

mail4rosey said...

ah, that issue is so prevalent now you'd like to think it's no longer an issue, but I sadly doubt that is the case. I'm sure it makes it hard for those who really do treat their animals reputably. I felt silly the last time we went to the zoo because I felt that way about the bigger animals.

Julie Maloney said...

I haven't been to a circus in YEARS. I'm just not a fan of the smell.

mail4rosey said...

Eeshoi, the resounding theme and I know I'm going to be thinking of it now. I hate that there is abuse most certainly associated w/the circus. It makes you wonder how many, why, etc.

mail4rosey said...

I'm pretty certain we'll end up going, but I wish it could just be clowns and acrobats, lol. :)

mail4rosey said...

They come every year and we haven't been tempted, but this year is different w/the little man really expressing an interest. We'll probably do it, at least once, and I'm guessing it'll be within the next week or two.

mail4rosey said...

No windows, Julie. The venue being used has no windows, lol.

Our Neck of the Woods said...

I went to quite a few when I was younger and really enjoyed them. But recently I've heard some horrible stories of how they train the animals and I just don't feel comfortable supporting something like that now.

Holy Ghost Writer said...

You might want to watch where you step as well.

mail4rosey said...

I cannot imagine not thinking about it while I'm there. I'm sure there are many people in the circus who are loving and kind to the animals, but how do you know? *Sigh*

mail4rosey said...

Notated. ;)

Kristi Maloney said...

We are going to a circus next week as a matter of fact - same thing, the elementary school is promoting it (so to speak!)I doubt it will be a huge event, it's at the Civic Center in the next town over. The kids are excited. I'm sure all will go well! :)

mail4rosey said...

And you don't sound one bit chicken. :)

Judy Haughton-James said...

I have never been to a circus but I have watched it on television. I would be a bit scared that something may happen. Anyway they hardly come to Jamaica and when they do they are usually held far away from where I live. Have a great weekend Rosey.

My husband took Mica to the circus. Can you believe he didn't have fun? He's used to Cirque du Soleil that we have on DVD. I think he was expecting that.

I honestly can't remember if I have ever been to a real circus. Definitely something we will have to do with Reagan though ~ as long as the clowns stay the hell away from me! I hate those things!!

I've not been to a circus. I would just be very aware of the surroundings and possibilities and keep a close eye on the youngins!

Gourmet Getaways said...

I have taken the kids to traveling circus, I must be another worrier, I worry that the tent will collapse in on us! I worry the animals will launch into the crowd ... And I don't like seeing the animals in cages before the show, they always seemed so small.

I don't know of circuses are still the same now??? The is going back about 20 years.., wow, where did the time go ?

RACHEL TaoOfPoop said...

I don't like circuses either. There is too much going on at once. I don't like the way the animals are treated. I'm with you. Sorry. I don't think I am much encouragement to go! :)

~ Noelle said...

thanks for the shout out :)
let me know if you do go. when we go, we are high enough that there is no need for worry.... but then again, its at the civic center type place, so much bigger...
although i do remember the shriner circus as a kid... and LOVED it then too :)
go. have fun. and tell us all about it ...

I have been but I have to admit that I'm really not a circus fan. I do enjoy the human acts, but I really don't like the animal acts at all.

Melissa S. said...

The circus is awesome! Ringling Brothers is of course, very safe, in case you're worried about stampedes, lol.
The ones I've attended in little one tent in a field fashion are so-so. I saw a Hispanic circus once, and they had the coolest acrobats. Go! You must!

mail4rosey said...

Thanks, Judy. You have a good weekend too. :)

mail4rosey said...

I haven't seen the Cirque on DVD but I intend to at some point. Everyone I've heard talk about it says it's good.

mail4rosey said...

I'm skeered of the big animals, lol. There's no restraints or anything on them, and even if there were...they're still pretty big and in a very confined space. I guess I'm thinking like myself...if I were confined like that, I wouldn't be a happy camper.

mail4rosey said...

Thanks, Terry. :)

mail4rosey said...

Agreed. Thanks for the visit. :)

mail4rosey said...

I've never been, I don't know. ;) I'm glad I'm not the only worrier over them though. :)

mail4rosey said...

I drove by the venue tonight (I was right there anyway to go grocery shopping) to make sure it's as small as I remembered, and it is, lol.

mail4rosey said...

You had fab pictures. I've never been a chicken in my life, Noelle. It's funny to me how hesitant I'm getting in my old age, especially over this one where chances are very slim anything at all will go wrong.

mail4rosey said...

I've let the kids ride on an elephant every summer for the last three years and now I'm worried over the circus, lol. Eesh. No idea why my mind's working the way it is, I'm blaming old age. ;)

mail4rosey said...

I think I'll like the trapeze acts, and probably the clowns. :)

mail4rosey said...

I am, I'm worried about stampedes, or a cat saying he's had enough, lol. Just a little worried. Silly, but true. :)

And now I've aired it publicly, bwuahahaha. Oh my.

Frugal in WV said...

My kids love the circus and go every year when it comes to town. You have a much larger chance of getting hit by a garbage truck than getting stampeded up a circus animal :) That is actually statistically true, you also have a greater chance of that than winning the lottery. Your car is the most dangerous place for anyone to be, which no one ever thinks about. The circus is much safer and it's a fun experience for kids. No worries, I promise :)

Maria said...

i've never been to a circus but sometimes i've felt like i could BE in one! :) lol.
i hope it goes well for you. take lotsa pics :)

Chasing Joy said...

I went to the circus as a kid. It is a great experience that every kid should have. It is very unlikely that something will go wrong. If it makes you feel better maybe look at the layout for the event online and have an exit strategy ready if needed.

Brandy said...

I have never heard of it.

mail4rosey said...

I love statistics like this, they're great for perspective. :)

mail4rosey said...

I live in a place that is a circus sometimes too, and boy am I ever surrounded by clowns. ;)

mail4rosey said...

Thanks, and thanks for the visit. :)

mail4rosey said...

It's just an everyday type of circus, but it's in a small closed up place, so that bothered me a bit. :)
