De-clutter and Earn Money Too!

Disclosure: This post was brought to you by Music Magpie.

Goodbye Winter, Hello Spring!

The Geese are back in full force, which is a good thing. It means winter is finally gone and warm weather is here to stay. From what I've been hearing and reading lately, most everyone who's been through winter has the cleaning bug right now. I know I do. The weather's warmer and we're itching to lighten up the colors, clean out the closets, open the windows, and get rid of the clutter.  For me, that includes going through the DVDs and CDs that have been sitting in boxes for years, and finally considering what to keep and what to give away.

Between my husband and I we literally have thousands of CDs. It's a tad ridiculous. Not as ridiculous as the amount of time it took us me to transfer them all to the iPod, but that's a different story for a different day. ;)  The funny thing is that I have the songs backed up on an external hard drive too, but I've just been having a hard time taking that final step to let go of the hard copies. I don't need them, and I know it. They've literally been sitting in boxes, unused, for years.

We don't have near as many DVDs that we're willing to part with (you can't back those up so easily), but we do have some.

musicMagpie has a service, which I recently discovered, that pays you money for your used CDs, DVDs, and games. It's FREE to use, and very easy. You just type in the barcode of the item you want to sell and it will tell you how much money they are willing to offer for your item. Easy Peasy, and a great way to de-clutter and make money at the same time. What's not to love?

I'm going to run it by hubby this evening when he gets home from work and see if he's willing to part with the CDs and DVDs we have but don't use anymore. Have you ever heard of such a service? Is it something you think you might like to use?

    1. Really?? We have so many books in the house, and even more in the garage. I didn't even think about such a thing for books, thanks for the FYI.

  5. Thank you so much! I really needed this info! I have so many CDs that need to be sold!

  6. I find it really hard to let go of hard copies, too. Makes me feel like one more era has passed, and I'm not quite as up to date as I should be. But on the upside, money is money. ;)

    1. I'm just chicken something will happen to my uploaded songs and the hard disk, then I won't have my music. It's been in our family a long time, I've even got Creed in there you know (still not ashamed, lol).

  7. I only buy things I really want when it comes to movies and CDs. So I wouldn't use it for that... however, I would use it to get rid of a lot of my husbands blu-rays that he doesn't even watch anymore ;)!

    1. You're getting rid of Blu-Rays and we still have VHS videos stacked up in the house, hahahhahaa. :) We have Blu Rays too. ;)

  8. I have not used that kind of service, but it does sound useful! But I do agree with the others. It is so hard to give up the hard copies!

    1. I remember having a lot of records once upon a time, they were pretty hard to part with... I still miss them, hahaha, but I wouldn't have played them again. We don't even have a record player.

  10. That's the best way of getting rid of those unused movies. Selling them would be great.

  11. I heard of them before, never knew if they were reputable or not though. Hard copies for cds I could give up, but movies, nope.

Comments are always welcome at both blogs. WOW just told hubby about this & even he sounds interested. I have SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MANY I can't begin to tell you especially with hubby being a musician. I'll google that musicmagpie service & see what I can find out or is it musicmagpie.com? Thanks so much for sharing, and your DVD shelf looks like mine for when the kids comeover. hehehehe hugs

    1. Yep, that's the addy.

And I bet you do have more music than most people! I had a friend in school who's dad played in a band and their whole living room was nothing but cassette tapes, an amplifier, guitar, and chair. ;)

  14. I decluttered using Amazon Trade for a lot of DVDs, books and video games. I still have a lot more I need to just donate! Especially the trashy romances I'm addicted to...Amazon Trade won't take them :)

    1. My husband just started trading in his textbooks. I didn't know you could do that either. Lots of great resources out there... some like this I would have never even thought of looking for, but I'm glad to have found it. :)

  15. It's a good idea. I reduced the space taken up by my dvd's and cd's by throwing out the hard plastic jewel cases and putting them either into film sleeves or cd caddies. but I have given away about half my books having replaced them electronically. Still a lot of clutter though. Cheers

  16. Oh Rosey, I was searching for something through my drawers today and realized...I have to clean them...all of them. This post makes me realize, it really is time. Oh and I noticed you live in Lansing, totally weird but I went to Lansing the summer I graduated. My best friend's sister lives/ed there.

  19. We take all of our DVDs out of their cases and put them in a big case. It takes up very little room and holds 300 DVDs per case. Honestly though with Netflix and Hulu+ we only have a few hard copies of most tv shows etc. We do have them on an external hard drive though since I really hate clutter :) This looks like a great idea!

    1. I haven't seen or heard of such a case, but it sounds marvelous. :) My mother-in-law has a lot of DVDs, but I don't think she'd part w/one ever. The case could be a great option for her. We'll have to Google next time she's visiting. :)

  20. I've been doing a bit of Spring Cleaning around the house. I've gone through all the kids' closets and already have more than 4 boxes of "extra" stuff. Time for a yard sale, maybe? I haven't gone through our DVDs and old CDs yet, though. I just might check out music magpie.
    Thanks,
    Kim

  23. Sounds like a great idea Rosey! I have not heard of a service like this before. Talking about CDs, I have several that I have not listened to in ages. My twin and I used to enjoy these CDs so much and now it is difficult for me to listen to them. Who knows, I may be able to do so one of these days?

    1. Music really evokes strong memories sometimes. I often think of my grandparents singing or dancing around a room if a certain song comes on.

I like the idea of this service. It seems worth looking into for the CDs I know I'm not going to listen to anymore (several artists immediately come to mind, lol). :)

  29. Wish I would have known about this today.
We just went through and donated a ton of DVD's to our local library... and a good amount of CDs to the local thrift store that in turn uses their profits to help Veterans...
