You Light Up My...House (discussing candles)

For a few years running our home lost power more than a couple of times throughout the year.  Finally, enough was enough and I purchased a generator for my husband as a Christmas gift.  That was a couple of years ago, and guess what happened?  The lights haven't gone out since and that generator remains unopened.  Isn't that the way those things go?

The one thing that helped us keep our sanity when the lights did go out was candles.  When the electric is out, and it gets dark, if you don't have them or some other type of artificial light, it's next to impossible to do anything but sleep (and who wants to go to sleep so early?).  Up until that point I wasn't really a candle lover.  I had some in the house that had literally been there for years...but now that I've used them, I'm sold.  The soft fragrance that fills the house appeals to me, and so does the visual that a nice candle creates.

We have candles in almost every room now.  Whether they are lit or unlit,  they do have the power to make a statement.  They can offer an element of elegance, a bit of festivity, a welcome burst of color, and/or provide a comfortable, homey feel to a room.  My current favorite type right now is a scented one, but candles with no fragrance have their place in a home as well (the dinner table instantly comes to mind).  Those are just a few of the benefits I can think of when it comes to candles.  How about you, do you use them?

Note:  When using candles, please be sure to exercise caution and use extra care in a home with small children or pets.  This post was brought to you by Tesco, a great place to search for all of your home furnishing needs, including candles.

  1. Never use them here, just grab a flashlight if the power goes out. As the cat would knock them over and burn the place down, hmmm that might not be a bad idea hahaha

    1. We have those at the ready too, but our challenge is different than yours...little man knows not to touch the candles but you can't keep him from wanting a flashlight that's turned on. :)

  3. I do love candles. Like you said, they can set the mood and make the house smell wonderful. I don't light them too often, but I do enjoy having candles around. Recently I am using a wax burner more often which is safer than an open flame. I light candles when I have company over and always have a couple lit in the bathroom.

    1. We have one wax burner and I like it, a lot, but it spilled once on the wall (I knocked into it) and stained the paint. :(

  7. Mmm...candles! They smell so good. I don't have any right now that we light simply because of Reagan. We have electric ones. But ... as soon as I know she properly understands that candles are not toys than I am breaking them out.
We do have one we bring out every once in a while and Reagan likes to pretend it's her birthday candle!

  8. I love candles. I don't spend much money on them because we don't have many places to put them haha.

I'm more an unscented fan though. I have bags of tea candles for when the lights go out though. It's easy to put a few on a plate and set on the coffee table they offer so much light!

  10. Maybe we should buy a generator. Our power goes out several times a year and it is so frustrating. It usually happens right after we have done our grocery shopping too :(

I do love candles. I am always burning them and tarts. I love a home that smells good!

  11. Yep, I can find my way to a candle in the dark if the lights were to go out. Your generator purchase is like my snow boot purchase. The good thing for me is that they'll never go out of style.

Love the story, I'm relaxed just thinking about candles :)

  13. I love candles. I only have them on the kitchen counter and they are most often contained. Some of Yankee Candle scents are great! I love Mountain Lodge. Does that just sound nice? :)

  14. We always have candles in our house Rosey as from time to time we have power-cuts. They are especially needed during the hurricane season. We used them as well as a Home Sweet Home lamp when we were without electricity for almost 2 weeks after Hurricane Sandy damaged our area. I love candles at Christmas, especially red candles. I lit two on the memory table I had for my departed brother and sister last Christmas.

    1. You've just added another wonderful use for candles, memory candles. I lit one for my brother recently too. :)

We always had candles in Florida because of the hurricanes...as a just in case thing, too. There's always some kind of weather threat, no matter where you live, isn't there?

  17. I use candles for decoration and getting the scented ones(LOVE VANILLA) makes for a ease and pleasantry in any room. When we had a dog, I used to have to place them up high, because depending on the scent, they may have gotten chewed up! LOL!

  20. I absolutely love candles of all types. I love when holidays come and go, because I can always stock up on discounted candles. 24. Hi Rosey,
I enjoyed your post. One of these days...you will need that good old generator. I remember when my boys were in elementary school and I would light a candle at the dinner table. They would immediately soften their voices. It was a pleasant reminder that it was time to use their indoor voices. I love burning candles around the house...but, with 3 housecats I have to admit we've singed a few whiskers along the way.
Thanks for sharing and for your kind comment on my blog.
    Have a great weekend,

I like your blog, the layout is pretty.

  25. I love candles for many reasons but I found a very special reason when my father was dying. My brother, with all the travel that came with his job, couldn't help often so I was with Dad 24/7. There was no question of me not being there and I have no regrets about doing so but with my teen daughter still at home, etc...and being Dad's sole caregiver I was more than a bit stressed out. That's when I discovered that gazing at a flickering candle flame whilst pacing my breathing...deep, slow breaths...helped me relax and release the stress.

Remind me of stacy purchasing a snow blower and then bam, no snow this year. *shakes head*
