Our D.C. Vacation

Going to Washington D.C. is one of my favorite things to do because a). my oldest son and his wife live there and b). there's so much to see and do.

This time, however, the trip did not exactly live up to our expectations.  Hubby got sick as could be on Tuesday.  He rarely gets sick, but when he does, he's down and out as it was this time.  Thursday rolled around and I told him to stay home, but he said it was okay, he was back to 50% and should feel better by the time we got there.  I packed the car and drove the whole trip so he could sleep (it takes me 12 hours, when he drives it takes 11).

Weather conditions couldn't have been nicer!  We left ice cold Michigan and got to very mild, clear weather in D.C.  Of course, I'd packed a lot of winter clothes, so when we arrived at my son's place to visit on the second day (the first day hubby, little one, and I slept at the hotel after the long drive, and the two middle kiddos went w/their older brother to his place), my little one was begging to take of his coat.  It was really just that nice!

You can see I totally overdressed him w/sweater, turtleneck, and coat (just assuming it would be cold). This is him pleading to be out of his coat, lol, which I let him do.

Hubby elected to stay at the hotel because even though he was better, he was still sick.  I don't know if you've seen the Wordless Wednesday post I had up regarding the last time my kids were together for a professional picture, but it's here if you want to see it.  I though that might be the last time they had a pic of just the four of them together, which is fine because I love the newest addition to our family very much (the oldest son's wife), but it still marked a note of sadness for me because well, you know, I'm mom, lol.  And the kids just grow up too darn fast!

So, long story short, one of the gifts my kids gave me was a trip to the studio for professional pictures.  But we had a dilemma, I didn't want to do them without hubby, who was back at the hotel sick, and the next day hubby wanted to spend toodling around D.C., seeing one of the art museums in particular, that we'd missed before.  So we opted on a whim, to go that day and just do the kids.  No one was dressed up, made, up, what have you, but it still turned out to be a most awesome gift!  Here are a few pictures from the photo shoot (we got to take the disc home that day):

My oldest and his wife who is 5-months along.

Here's my four together (hurray!)

One of the two girls together that I really liked
And my favorite, all of the kids together
There were a lot of great singles, or paired up shots too, but these were my faves.  I am no longer even a little sad that the kids are growing up and dynamics are changing.  The changes are all good ones.  And I'm so happy we are adding new members to our family, it just makes it (and the pictures) that much more wonderful.  I cannot wait until the baby is here (early May), I already know he/she (they still cannot tell the baby's gender) will be the perfect addition to the family.  Actually he/she already is.

It turned out to be a great decision to get the photo shoot done that day despite hubby being sick because the next day I got it, and boy did I get it.  Hubby was still sick, but no where near as sick as he'd been.  The oldest picked up the two middle kids and spent the day w/them.  That night, my daughter got sick too.  *sigh*  So far, my oldest and his wife haven't gotten it (knock on wood!!!), and our little one hasn't gotten it (he's in school right now).  The second-oldest was coughing and sneezing though, so I believe he might be in for it too.  He did make his plane back to Florida though that next morning, without incident.

So, we didn't get to spend much time at all with the kids (my husband only to say hello's and goodbye's!), but hubby was well enough to drive home, so I could sleep.  And when we got back to Michigan, we were met with winter conditions, and freezing rain.  Welcome home.  But I'll tell you, when you're sick, you're just glad to pull up into that driveway.

Hopefully we'll get to see the oldest and his wife again soon, for a better visit. :)

Right now we have two family members left to recover (I'm actually up and running a bit today), but I would still rather have a day with my son and his wife than no time at all, so for the trip, despite the circumstances, I am grateful.  And D.C. will wait.... I know it's not going anywhere.  :)

  5. Those pictures turned out so lovely! I like that no one was made up. It makes the photos seem more "real" you know?

I seriously wouldn't have noticed the bump on dil if you hadn't pointed out she was 5 months along. Some women just have all the luck when it comes to carrying well lol.

  15. Those were really nice photos. The trip looks like it turned well in the end, excluding the sick bug. 11 hours is still pretty good. It is super hard for me to drive long distances. My hubby normally drives.

  16. Rosey,
You made such beautiful lemonade from all the lemons you were given!!!

Our Christmas trip got jammed up by the bad weather that stayed north of DC. Crazy time of year to travel.

I hope you all mend quickly! And don't get another round of ick!
