Blog Hopping and Giveaways: Do you like them?

Today there are a large assortment of blog hops to choose from, and I for one like them.  Every single hop I have participated in has brought me to a blog that I am inclined to re-visit.  I would start shouting out the names, but there are too many, and I know I would forget one of my favorites anyway!

I have heard others say they don't like the hopping...it's too time-consuming, takes up too much room on the blog, and so on and so forth.  And I understand that too, especially the time factor. It's like a good television show, once you delve in, you do invest your time, and time is so often a precious commodity.

Then there are giveaways...

People have mixed feelings on those too, and in fact, I think there is a stronger dislike for them from some than there is in regards to blog hopping.  When it comes to the giveaways, it seems like you either like them or hate them.  I know one person who feels it's inauthentic for a blogger to give things away (a gimmick). I know others who love to enter contests.  I am of the latter.  I really like the contests. I think they're fun and we've gotten some really cool stuff by entering.  I don't win often, but it's always fun to get that 'Congratulations, your name has been randomly selected..." e-mail.  And I like to offer contests to the readers of my blog.  I really enjoy sending out that, "Congratulations... " e-mail as well.

There are other matters to discuss when it comes to blogging, but these two seem to bubble to the surface when it comes to things people like or dislike about blogs. In the end, I think it's just a matter of preference.  The beauty of blogging is you can do what you want to, because well, because it's your blog, and that's part of what makes it nice!

Do you have a preference in regards to either topic?  I'm just curious if the sampling of opinions I've heard on the two is the norm, or if there are other opinions looming large that I've not yet heard.  :)

  1. I enjoy both. Mind you, I haven't had as much time to "blog hop" in a while, but not because I don't want to. I enjoy stumbling across a new blog! So fun :) I also enjoy the giveaways, and love offering them on my blog because it's nice to be able to "treat" my readers with the chance to win some cool stuff! And nothing more exciting than being able to make someone's day by telling them they've won :) And in my opinion, it's simple, if people don't like blog hops or giveaways, just don't take part in them, but if you do like them, then have fun enjoying them! :) hehe

    1. My latest problem is I'm blog hopping too much and when I want to go visit a new blog I found that I particularly enjoyed, I forget what it was called. -_- I do bookmark them sometimes but I'm pretty awful about checking my bookmarks.

  2. I enjoy giveaway,.... as for blog hops. I used to do them all the time. But many blogs have you visit them and they think they are to good to visit you back and leave comments. That is why I stopped doing blog hops.

If someone leaves a comment on my blog,... I always try to go to their blog and comment back. Always!! I feel if they took the time to comment on my blog, they deserve for me to read and comment on thier blog.

I have found so many great bloggers by commenting and visiting blogs.

  3. I enjoy both also - although a lot of give aways are for the U.S. only - so I don't bother anymore. My only pet peeve with the blogmosphere is word verification!
God I hate that thing lol - It sometimes take 3 and 4 attempts to leave someone a comment!!!

    1. You are one of the first people that came to mind when I was thinking of great people and blogs I've found through a blog hop.

For anyone who hasn't seen Suzan's blog, I highly recommend a visit, you're going to love it!

  4. I have mixed feelings about both. As a blogger I have had both positive and negative experiences. As for both, the great thing is you can choose whether or not to participate. I choose not to do giveaways on my blogs because promoting was time consuming but from time to time I like entering a giveaway.

    1. I've had negative from one of them, but it was totally the exception. For the most part I've had really great experiences with both. :)

  5. I think everything in moderation - I have just done my first of both. I prefer my blog to have substance though. With that said the hop definitely gets you to meet some bloggers you would never normally meet. With that said thanks for stopping by my hop!

  6. I really enjoy reading and since I started blogging I don't do as much reading (as in real books) that I used to. So I prefer the writing blog world, where I can get my reading in there. I tend to linkup with places that don't have follow me rules. I can read and comment if I want. In my opinion this is how I gain true friends and followers.

  11. This is such a great question! When I first started blogging about one year ago, I hopped around alot to connect to all kinds of different blogs that interested me. I do less hopping now because I was having some issues with reciprocity. I try my best to leave real comments, not just "Cool blog now follow me" comments (those irk me). I genuinely want to connect with bloggers that share my interests (which are quite varied). I host the one Hop (Kid Lit Blog Hop) and by creating it, I can really focus my efforts on connecting with other bloggers and authors who love children's books. I am also a regular at some other Hops as well and participate in those. I think the real trick is focussing your energies on blogs that you really are interested in. Not every blog is for everyone!

As for giveaways, I host many of those too. It sounds silly but it really does bring me joy to send out the email notice that someone won something. I've also recently decided that whenever we are requested to review a book, the author or publisher must provide us with a review copy and a giveaway copy as well. If I get excited about a book, I want to pass those on to my followers. As a book blogger, aside from the cost of the books and the shipping, we are free advertising for a book. It's pretty cheap marketing for an author or publisher!

I will continue to do both (and to participate in both!) :)

    1. I love the Kid Lit Blog hop!! I almost participated this time (I have before), with a write-up about an author I found who gives away her books on Kindle for free, and they're dual language...but while the Spanish is perfect, the English has errors (not uncommon it seems, on e-reader books). I'm not sure I should promote that...though I do enjoy the books.

    2. That's amazing that an author gives her books away - too bad about the spelling/grammar errors. These do tend to be a problem with self-published e-books though, you are correct! I'm sure we'll see you again at the Hop when you've got something to link up with - it's always a different rotation of people. Cheers! :)

  12. Great question, and how ironic, that you have this post up today, considering I'm co-hosting a linky party, lol! I have had three giveaways on my blog so far, and thought it was so fun contacting the winner! Two of the giveaways have been items I have knit, and I feel a real connection with the person when my hand made item is being packaged up. Kind of like I'm sharing a little piece of "me". I have also entered several giveaways, but have won two so far, ironically, from the same blogger, who is a friend of mine when I lived in another Province (State for most of you). I haven't won anyone else's yet, but still trying...!

By the way, thanks so becoming a follower! I appreciate each and every one of them, and the novelty has not been lost of me. By the way, I'm now following back, and am looking forward to getting to know you better!

  13. I like both. I didn't start doing giveaways until after I was blogging for a good year or so, but I really haven't stopped since I started. It seems like people really like entering from what I can tell, too.

I took a break from blog hops for a while, but they really are a cool way to meet new bloggy friends, so I started back up a while ago.

    1. I actually found your blog through giveaways a long, long, long time ago. And I used to read blogs, but rarely commented. I didn't realize the importance of it until I started a blog of my own. What a great group of people you meet when you do start talking!

  14. I like blog hops where you link up a post instead of your whole blog because I think what a blogger chooses to link up gives you a good idea on what they and their blog is all about.

I like entering giveaways, the smaller ones where I actually feel like I have a chance of winning, LOL

  15. This is a great post Rosey ~ I do like blog hops but I like the ones that are more about content, not quantity of just finding people to like you or follow you without interaction.
Those are the ones I will get involved with.

As far as giveaways ~ I will enter the occasional few but I like the ones that have to do with helping out blogs ~ free advertising and such. Mind you I won't complain if cash or gift cards come my way!!!

Thank you for linking to Raising Imperfection!
Please come back Friday to see if you were featured. :)
    Good luck!

  18. I LOVE the giveaways. I don't win often, but when I do it's such a thrill.

I'm back and forth on the hopping. I agree, it is time consuming, so I may only participate in hops once a month or so. Plus I don't like it when I follow a bunch of people, leaving thoughtful comments, and they don't return the courtesy of even stopping in to say hi or whatever. I find that to be rude. However, if it weren't for the hops, I wouldn't have found most of the blogs that I like to follow now. So, to me, the hops have their good and bad moments.

    1. You're so good about commenting! If I'm hopping I select a minimum of five people and comment, knowing when I go in that I likely will not get more than one return visit, if I'm lucky. But the ones I do get sometimes turn into great visits back and forth that continue on,and if I'm real lucky, the personality behind the blog will emerge and an online friendship will take place.

There are two blogs I comment on all of the time and neither blogger EVER comes over here, but I like them (both elderly bloggers), and they don't get a lot of visitors, so I keep going back. :)

And then there's the rare blog you come across in a hop that's not suited to your style. I won't comment there, just quietly move along and know that 'to each his own' is a very good thing (and I'm sure some people feel that way when they visit here too, and that's fine :) ).

It does open a lot of doors for communication and finding new blogs that I know I wouldn't get w/o a hop.

  19. Hi Rosey,
What a great post! Ironically, I've run giveaways on my blog and currently do a blog hop. I LOVE the blog hop. There are so many great blogs that visit and so it's easy for me to visit them at once. It's great when they leave comments too b/c I return the visit. (Thank you, Rosey.) With the exception of the last few weeks (technical difficulties), I respond to 99% of the comments.
As for giveaways, I have mixed feelings about them too. I've won a few so that's great. I love showing people great products (since I blog about products that are made in the USA). I also love to send that email that says, "You just won something." At the risk of having this bite me later: I like simple things. Having to visit umpteen number of blogs to enter a giveaway is not something that I am up for. For this reason, whatever my giveaway has been, I have made sure that I make some of the points easy ones. I always do a 1-pt entry and remind people to have a great day or something like that. It looks great when I have a lot of followers; my goal is to have regular readers. I am always appreciative of anyone that visits my blog. It's funny b/c I've had some people comment on my blog more than once and I always get excited, "Hey, I got a repeat visit! YAY!"
